Brewers name Minor League Players and Pitchers of the Month for August

Frelick and Mitchell Earn Players of the Month; Gasser and Cruz Named Pitchers of the Month

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Brewers have named outfielders Sal Frelick and Garrett Mitchell as their Minor League Players of the Month for August and left-hander Robert Gasser and right-hander Stiven Cruz as Minor League Pitchers of the Month.
 
Frelick, 22, batted .376/.453/.462 with 6 doubles, a triple, 7 RBI, 16 runs and 3 stolen bases in 24 games with Triple-A Nashville in August. He drew 12 walks and struck out just 9 times in 108 plate appearances.
 
Selected in the first round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, Frelick led the International League in hits in August (35) and ranked among league leaders in batting average (2nd, .376) and on-base percentage (4th, .453). He recorded multi-hit efforts in 11 of his 24 games and is currently on a 19-game on-base streak.
 
Mitchell, 23, hit .342/.435/.466 with 6 doubles, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 15 runs and 9 stolen bases in 20 games with Triple-A Nashville in August before being promoted to the big leagues on Aug. 27.
 
Picked in the first round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, Mitchell ranked August leaders in the International League in stolen bases (T5th, 9), on-base percentage (7th, .435) and batting average (T8th, .342).
 
Gasser, 23, posted a 2.21 ERA (20.1ip, 5er) with 26 strikeouts and just 8 walks over 4 starts for Double-A Biloxi in August. The left-hander held opponents to just a .194 batting average (14-for-72). He was promoted to Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 30.
 
Acquired as part of a trade with San Diego on Aug. 1, Gasser earned a win in his debut in the Brewers organization with 5.0 scoreless innings on 2 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts on Aug. 6 at Mississippi. He fanned 7 batters over 5.2 innings in a start on Aug. 19 at Montgomery and punched out 9 in 5.2 innings on Aug. 26 vs. Chattanooga.
 
Cruz, 20, made 5 starts between Low-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin in August, posting a 1.44 ERA (25ip, 4er) with 31 strikeouts, 8 walks and a .129 opponent batting average (11-for-85).
 
He made a pair of starts for the Mudcats in August, tossing 4.0 scoreless frames with a hit, a walk and 4 strikeouts in his final start with Carolina on Aug. 10. Cruz allowed just 1 earned run and 4 hits in 16.0 innings over 3 starts in August, including 6.0 scoreless frames on Aug. 24 vs. Lansing and 4.0 scoreless innings on Aug. 30 at Peoria.
