Dodgers recall Jake Reed, select Heath Hembree

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled right-handed pitcher Jake Reed, selected the contract of Heath Hembree and optioned right-handed pitchers Michael Grove and Phil Bickford to Triple-A Oklahoma City. In order to make room for Hembree on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated infielder Eddy Alvarez for assignment.

Reed, 29, returns for his second stint with the Dodgers after making three appearances and allowing one run over 2.2 innings in his first stint with the club. He has spent time with the Dodgers and Mets this season and he is a combined 1-0 with a 9.00 ERA (9 ER/9.0 IP) and eight strikeouts in eight games. He has appeared in 18 career Major League games and he is 1-1 with a 6.16 ERA and 18 strikeouts against nine walks. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he was 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA (1 ER/10.1 IP) and 11 strikeouts in 10 games. In his minor league career, he is 21-15 with a 3.69 ERA and 394 strikeouts in 375.1 innings. He was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers on July 13 from the New York Mets.

Hembree, 33, joins the Dodgers for the first time this season after signing a minor league contract with the club on June 30. Prior to joining the Dodgers, he was with the Pirates and was 2-0 with a 7.16 ERA (13 ER/16.1 IP) and 12 strikeouts against 14 walks in 20 games. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he posted a 1-0 record with a 4.82 ERA (5 ER/9.1 IP) and 14 strikeouts in 10 games. He has been in the Majors parts of 10 seasons with San Francisco (2013), Boston (2014-2020), Philadelphia (2020), Cincinnati (2021), New York-NL (2021) and Pittsburgh (2022) and he is a combined 20-12 with a 4.33 ERA (168 ER/349.0 IP) and 387 strikeouts in 351 games. He was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the fifth round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft out of College of Charleston

Grove, 26, made the start last night, pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out four. He is 0-0 with a 4.82 ERA (5 ER/9.1 IP) and seven strikeouts in three games with the Dodgers. In 17 minor league starts between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City, he is a combined 0-4 with a 3.48 ERA (26 ER/67.1 IP) and 78 strikeouts. He has been with the Dodgers four seasons, and he is a combined 1-13 with a 5.83 ERA and 239 strikeouts in 59 minor-league games. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of West Virginia University.

Bickford, 27, is 2-1 with a 5.14 ERA (28 ER/49.0 IP) in 51 games for the Dodgers this season. He has been in the Majors parts of three seasons with Milwaukee (2020-2021) and Los Angeles (2021-2022) and he is a combined 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA (48 ER/101.1 IP) and 110 strikeouts against 32 walks in 109 games. He was claimed by the Dodgers last season on May 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers. He was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of College of Southern Nevada.
