Giants acquire four pitchers, two infielders and two outfielders in trades this afternoon

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The San Francisco Giants made the following trades this afternoon:

•        RHP Sam Dyson traded to Minnesota Twins in exchange for RHP Prelander Berroa, OF Jaylin Davis and RHP Kai Wei Teng.

•        RHP Mark Melancon traded to Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Daniel Winkler and RHP Tristan Beck.

•        LHP Drew Pomeranz and RHP Ray Black traded to Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for IF Mauricio Dubon.

•        Acquired IF Scooter Gennett and cash considerations from Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a player to be named later or cash.

•        LHP Jacob Lopez traded to Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for OF Joseph McCarthy.

Transaction with Minnesota Twins

Dyson, 31, had a 2.47 ERA in 49 relief appearances for the Giants this season and posted 47 strikeouts and only seven walks in 51.0 innings. Acquired by the Giants in a trade from the Rangers in 2017, Dyson went 11-8 with a 2.94 ERA and 19 saves in 161 outings in his three-year Giants career.

Berroa, 19, went 2-1 with a 4.55 ERA along with 37 strikeouts in 31.2 innings for rookie-level Elizabethton. In just three minor league seasons, the Santo Domingo native has posted a record of 6-1 with a 3.96 ERA in 26 games (18 starts).

Davis, 25, has combined for a .298 batting average with 73 runs scored, 20 doubles, 25 home runs and 67 RBI for double-A Pensacola and triple-A Rochester this season. He has 67 home runs in the minor leagues since he was selected in the 24th round of the 2016 MLB Draft and led all Twins minor leaguers in home runs.

Teng, 20, has registered a 4-0 record with a 1.60 ERA along with 49 strikeouts and 14 walks allowed in nine games (eight starts) for single-A Midland. Signed by the Twins out of Taiwan in 2017, Teng has a 2.51 ERA in 19 career minor league appearances, including 17 starts.

Transaction with Atlanta Braves

Melancon, 34, has gone 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA (18er, 46.1ip) along with 44 strikeouts and 16 walks in 43 relief appearances this season. He was signed by the Giants as a free agent in 2016 and went 6-8 with a 3.67 ERA and 15 saves in 116 appearances during his three-year Giants career. 

Winkler, 29, has appeared in 27 games with the Braves this season posting a 3-1 record and a 4.98 ERA (12er, 21.2ip). He’s also gone 0-1 with a 4.86 ERA (9er, 16.2ip) in 18 relief outings for triple-A Gwinnett. Drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 20th round of the 2011 draft, the Effingham, Illinois native has a Major League record of 8-2 with a 3.68 ERA in 117 games, all with the Braves.

Beck, 23, has gone 2-2 with a 5.32 ERA (27er, 45.2ip) between the Gulf Coast League Braves (Rookie) and Class A Advanced Florida. The Corona, CA native was a fourth round draft selection by the Braves in 2018 from Stanford University.

Transaction with Milwaukee Brewers

Pomeranz, 30, posted a record of 2-9 with a 5.68 ERA (49er, 77.2ip) in 21 games (17 starts) in his first season with the Giants this year.

Black, 29, went 1-0 with a 5.16 ERA (13er, 22.2ip) in 23 games (one start) with triple-A Sacramento this season. He was recalled from triple-A twice and appeared in two games with San Francisco. A seventh round draft selection by the Giants in 2011, Black had a 6.04 ERA in 28 relief appearances in his two seasons at the big league level with the Giants. 

Dubon, 25, became the first Major League player to be born and raised in Honduras when he made his Major League debut earlier this month, appearing in two games with the Brewers. Dubon, who attended Capital Christian High School, located in Sacramento, has spent the majority of the 2019 season with triple-A San Antonio, batting .297 (120-for-404) with 59 runs scored, 22 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 47 RBI, 18 walks and nine stolen bases in 98 games. Ranked as Milwaukee’s third-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Dubon ranked sixth in the Pacific Coast League with 120 hits.

Transaction with Cincinnati Reds

Gennett, 29, has gone 15-for-69 (.217) with three doubles and five RBI in 21 games with the Reds after missing the first three months of the season due to a groin strain suffered in spring training. The 2018 All-Star hit 50 home runs in his two-plus seasons with the Reds after he was claimed off waivers from the Brewers in 2017.

Transaction with Tampa Bay Rays

Lopez, 21, was a 26th round draft selection by the Giants last year. He was 2-3 with a 3.02 ERA in nine starts for short-season Salem-Keizer this year.

McCarthy, 25, was a fifth round draft selection by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 out of the University of Virginia. He combined for a .192 batting average with six home runs and 23 RBI in 43 games with Class A Advanced Charlotte and triple-A Durham this season.
