SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants and President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey announced today the following promotion and hirings within the Baseball Operations department.
Paul Bien has been promoted to Assistant General Manager, Baseball Analytics after spending the last four seasons as the Vice President, Baseball Analytics. In his role, Bien is responsible for overseeing the organization’s baseball analytics department in utilizing data and technology to deliver information to scouting, player development, and Major League coaching staffs. He also provides quantitative research and analysis in support of all aspects of baseball operations, with a focus on evaluating potential player acquisitions at all levels. The 39-year-old joined the Giants in 2012 and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA.
Curt Casali rejoins the Giants organization as an Advisor to Baseball Operations. Casali, 37, is fresh off an 11-year Major League career that saw him appear in 543 games from 2014-2024 with Tampa Bay (2014-2017), Cincinnati (2018-2020, 2023), San Francisco (2021-22, 2024), and Seattle (2022). Casali joined the Giants as a free agent ahead of the 2021 season and caught alongside Posey as the Giants went on to win a franchise-record 107 games in the regular season and claim the NL West title. Casali spent most of 2022 in the orange and black before being traded to Seattle at the trade deadline. He returned to San Francisco in mid-May 2024 and spent the remainder of the season with the Giants. A 10th-round pick of the Tigers in 2011 out of Vanderbilt, Casali appeared in 1,030 career games between the Majors and minors from 2011-2024.
Javier López joins the baseball department as an Advisor to Baseball Operations. López, 48, spent seven years of his 14-year playing career in San Francisco as a member of the “Core Four” bullpen that helped the Giants win three World Series titles in five seasons from 2010-2014. A member of the Giants Wall of Fame, López pitched in 446 regular-season games in a Giants uniform from 2010-2016 with a 2.47 ERA. In 25 postseason games with San Francisco in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016, López was 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 13.0 innings with 14 strikeouts. In his 14-year playing career for Colorado (2003-2005), Arizona (2005), Boston (2006-2009), Pittsburgh (2010), and San Francisco (2010-2016), López was 30-17 with a 3.48 ERA in 839 games. In addition to his three World Series rings with San Francisco, López was also a member of the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox.
