Guardians announce 2024 player development staff assignments

CLEVELAND, OH  –  The Cleveland Guardians today announced the organizational staff alignment within the Player Development System for the upcoming Minor League season.

Andy Tracy (fourth season) will again captain the Triple-A Columbus roster, leading the Clippers to a combined 212-211 (.501) record over his three seasons at the helm. Owen Dew (Pitching Coach) and Junior Betances (Hitting Coach) return to the Clippers staff with Mike Mergenthaler (Hitting) and Daniel Robertson (Bench) joining the staff after spending 2023 in Double-A Akron. With the promotion of Rouglas Odor to the Major League staff, Greg DiCenzo assumes the Akron managerial position after his 2023 stint as the Bench Coach in Columbus, having previously managed High-A Lake County in 2021 and ’22. DiCenzo will be joined in Akron with Jordan Becker (Hitting), Amanda Kamekona (Asst. Hitting), Cody Buckel (Pitching), Michael Poole (Asst. Pitching) and Kyle Lindquist (Bench).

Omir Santos (High-A Lake County) and Jordan Smith (Class-A Lynchburg) will return to their respective managerial helms in 2024 with each club coming off winning seasons in ’23. Yan Rivera moves up from Smith’s Lynchburg Bench Coach to assume his first duties as manager of the ACL club in Goodyear. Juan De La Cruz will manage the DSL Blue squad while Jonathan López takes over DSL Red managerial duties following a six-year playing career in the Cleveland system, 2016-21, before joining the organization as a coach. 

Other notable Player Development coordinator and coaching promotions and hires include:

Andrew Romine (ACL Bench Coach): Begins coaching career after spending parts of 11 seasons and 613 games at the Major League level from 2010-21, playing all over the diamond with Detroit, Chicago-NL, Texas, Seattle and the LA Angels. The versatile infielder appeared in games at all nine positions. Played professionally for 15 seasons from 2007-21 after a collegiate career at Arizona State. His brother, Austin, has enjoyed an 11-year ML catching career, debuting in 2011.

**Andrew Moore (**AAA Asst. Pitching Coach): Joins the Guardians organization after an 8-year professional pitching career in the Seattle, Tampa Bay, Detroit, San Francisco and Toronto organizations. The righty made 12 appearances (10 starts) for the Seattle Mariners at the ML level in 2017 and 2019. Was Seattle’s 2nd round pick in the 2015 MLB Draft out of Oregon State.

Craig Massoni (Complex Hitting Coordinator): Enters his fifth season in the organization, spending 2023 as Hitting Coach for the Arizona Complex League club. This season marks his first as Complex Hitting Coordinator.

Jesus Sánchez (DSL Lead Pitching Coach): Takes helm of the pitching team at the Dominican Complex, overseeing the pitching staffs of the Red and Blue teams as well as developmental players.

Shane McCarthy (ACL Pitching Coach): Recently retired after six seasons pitching in the organization following his 2018 18th round draft selection out of Seton Hall. Made 9 relief appearances in Akron in 2023 following right elbow surgery the prior season.

The 2024 Minor League season is currently slated to begin on March 29 (Triple-A) and April 5 (Double-A; Class-A).
