Andrés Muñoz of the Seattle Mariners named the American League Reliever of the Month for August; Raisel Iglesias of the Atlanta Braves named the National League Reliever of the Month for August

September 3rd, 2023

Seattle Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz has been voted the American League Reliever of the Month for August, and Atlanta Braves closer Raisel Iglesias has been voted the National League Reliever of the Month for August.

Muñoz earned his first career monthly honor and became the first Mariners reliever to claim a Reliever of the Month Award since Edwin Díaz won his fourth award of the season in August 2018. Other than Díaz, the only other Mariners reliever to win the award prior to Muñoz was J.J. Putz in June 2007.

Iglesias claimed his second career Reliever of the Month honor and his first since joining the Braves after winning in July 2021 while pitching for the Los Angeles Angels. Iglesias is just the second Braves hurler to take home the award (fourth time overall), joining Craig Kimbrel, who won in August 2011, September 2012 and August 2013.

Andrés Muñoz, Seattle Mariners
• The 24-year-old right-hander went 1-1 with nine saves in 11 opportunities and a 1.93 ERA in his 14 August appearances. In 14.0 innings pitched, he permitted seven runs (three earned) on 12 hits with seven walks and 20 strikeouts.

• In his first full month serving as the primary closer for Seattle, Muñoz registered at least one strikeout in 12 of his 14 appearances during the month.

• The Los Mochis, Mexico native opened the month with saves in consecutive contests on August 2nd vs. Boston and August 3rd on the road against the Los Angeles Angels. He did not permit a baserunner in either outing, fanning five of the combined six batters faced.

• In four appearances during Seattle’s eight-game winning streak from August 15th-22nd, Muñoz did not allow an earned run while permitting four hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts across 4.0 innings pitched.

• Muñoz, who closed out his award-winning month by notching saves in three straight scoreless appearances from August 25th-30th, struck out the side in a 14-pitch perfect frame to seal a 3-2 victory over the visiting Kansas City Royals on August 27th.

Raisel Iglesias, Atlanta Braves

• Iglesias faced the minimum in six of his 13 appearances and allowed no more than one baserunner in nine outings while registering at least one strikeout in 12 of his 13 games.

• The Isla de la Juventud, Cuba native appeared on three consecutive days twice during his award-winning month (August 7th-9th and August 29th-31st), earning a pair of saves during each stretch.

• Since July 26th, Iglesias is one of two NL relievers (and five MLB relievers) with a 0.00 ERA and at least 10 outings, joining Brusdar Graterol of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

• Iglesias enters play today having not allowed an earned run in 18.0 consecutive scoreless innings.
