Coaching Staff Bios

Although Brian Holman pitched for the Mariners for only three seasons (1989-1991) he left a big mark. Holman was acquired by the Mariners in May 1989 from the Montreal Expos, along with Randy Johnson and Gene Harris, for Mark Langston and Mike Campbell. Holman was the winning pitcher for the Mariners Opening Night against the Los Angeles Angels on April 9, 1990. Less than two weeks later, against the Oakland A’s, Holman retired the first 26 batters he faced. With two outs in the bottom of the 9th, former Mariner Ken Phelps hit a pinch hit home run, turning a perfect game into a one-hit win. A workhorse of the starting rotation, Holman notched 32 wins and 14 complete games in just two and a half seasons.

After Holman’s bright future was cut short by an arm injury, he got involved in youth baseball and coached at the high school varsity level as well as private instruction. Today, Holman is on the staff of the Edge baseball academy in Fort Worth, Texas.

Mike Moore was selected by the Mariners first overall in the 1981 MLB Draft. During his 14-year Major League career, Moore pitched for the Mariners (1982-1988), Oakland A’s (1989-1992), where he was an All-Star (1989) and played in two World Series (1989, which the A’s won, and 1990, which the Cincinnati Reds won), and the Detroit Tigers (1993-1995). During the seven years he pitched for the Mariners, Moore started 217 games, including a league-leading 37 in 1986.

John Moses was drafted by the Mariners in 1980 in the 16th round. He made his Major League debut on August 23, 1982. Known for his versatility on the field, Moses could be slotted into almost any position. Moses played six season with the Mariners over two stints (1982-1987, 1992). He also played with the Minnesota Twins (1988-1990) and Detroit Tigers (1991). After retiring as a player, Moses spent parts of seven seasons as a Major League coach and minor league manager.

Jeff Schaefer had a five-year Major League career as an infielder. He played shortstop, third and second base for the Chicago White Sox (1989), Mariners (1990-1992) and Oakland A’s (1994). Since 2007, he has been working to develop high school players through his Carolinas Baseball Center in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Virginia Sports Complex. Schaefer is widely regarded as an authority on travel/showcase baseball and a leading source for player evaluation and promotion.

Gary Wheelock has logged over 43 years in professional baseball as a player and coach. He was part of the Mariners organization for over 25 years. After a rookie year pitching for the then-California Angels in 1976, Wheelock joined the Mariners for their inaugural season (1977). He pitched for the Mariners for two seasons (1977, 1980). Beginning in 1983, Wheelock coached in the Mariners system including stints in Bellingham, San Bernardino, Everett and Peoria. His most recent assignment with the Mariners was as Minor League Rehab Pitching Coordinator (2012-2016). Wheelock also coached in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers systems, as well as the Venezuelan Winter Leagues, in Taiwan and Australia. He also worked in player development for New Zealand’s Under 18 baseball program.

Keith Comstock pitched for the Mariners from 1989-1991. He also played for the Minnesota Twins (1984), San Francisco Giants (1987) and San Diego Padres (1987-1988) over a six-year Major League career. Comstock also pitched two season for the Yomiuri Giants (1985-1986) in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. Since retiring as a player Comstock has coached in the San Francisco Giants system (1993-2000), Los Angeles Angels system (2001-2006) and the Texas Rangers organization.
