SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Director of Amateur Scouting Scott Hunter announced today that the club selected 22 players in the 2023 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
The Mariners selected 10 pitchers, 1 catcher, 6 infielders, and 5 outfielders. Seattle selected 18 college players and 4 high school players.
The Mariners had 4 picks on day 1 of the draft. They selected infielder Colt Emerson in the 1st round (22nd overall) out of John Glenn High School in Ohio. Seattle had back-to-back picks at No. 29 and No. 30, selecting outfielder Jonny Farmelo out of Westfield High School in Virginia at 29 and shortstop Tai Peete out of Trinity Christian School in Georgia with the 30th pick. They finished Day 1 of the draft with 3B Ben Williamson out of William and Mary (VA) with the 57th overall pick.
The Mariners selected high school players with 4 of their first 6 picks in the draft, including drafting prep products with each of their first 3 selections.
With the Mariners final pick of the draft (No. 607 overall), they took RHP Will Watson, a Burlington, Washington Native out of San Joaquin Delta College in California. This marks the second-consecutive draft that a Mariners selection has ties to Washington State, after selecting RHP Stefan Raeth in the 17th round out of the University of Washington in 2022.
