Mariners recall LHP Justus Sheffield from Double-A Arkansas; RHP Cory Gearrin claimed off waivers by New York-AL

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Justus Sheffield, LHP, recalled from AA Arkansas.
  • Cory Gearrin, RHP, claimed off waivers by New York-AL.

Sheffield (#33) is scheduled to be the Mariners starting pitcher for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game against the Toronto Blue Jays at T-Mobile Park.

Sheffield, 23, is the Mariners No. 3 prospect according to Baseball America and the club's No. 9 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He is appearing in his 2nd stint with the Mariners this season after making his club debut in a relief appearance on April 26 vs. Texas. He worked 3.0 innings in that game against the Rangers and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (1 home run), while walking 4 and striking out 3. He has spent the majority of the 2019 season in the Mariners minor league system, splitting time between AA Arkansas (12 G, 12 GS) and AAA Tacoma (13 G, 12 GS). With Arkansas, he was 5-3 with a 2.19 ERA (19 ER, 78 IP) with 18 walks and 85 strikeouts in 12 starts. He went 2-6 with a 6.87 ERA (42 ER, 55.0 IP) with 41 walks and 48 strikeouts in 13 games (12 starts) with Tacoma.

Sheffield was acquired by Seattle from New York-AL, along with Erik Swanson (rhp) and Dom Thompson-Williams (of) in exchange for James Paxton (lhp) on Nov. 19, 2018. He spent most of the 2018 season with Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees organization, where he went 6-4 with a 2.56 ERA (25 ER, 88.0 IP) with 84 strikeouts and 36 walks in 20 games (15 starts). He also made 5 starts with Double-A Trenton, going 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA (7 ER, 28.0 IP) with 39 strikeouts and 14 walks. The native of Tullahoma, TN, made his Major League debut with New York-AL on Sept. 19, 2018 vs. Boston.

Sheffield was originally selected by Cleveland in the 1st round (31st overall) of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Tullahoma High School (Tullahoma, TN). He has been a top-10 organizational prospect according to Baseball America since making his professional debut in 2014. Over 6 minor league seasons in the Indians (2014-16), Yankees (2016-18) and Mariners (2019-c) organizations, Sheffield has a career record of 43-33 with a 3.31 ERA (228 ER, 620.2 IP) with 640 strikeouts and 243 walks in 128 career games (118 starts).

Gearrin, 33, made 48 appearances with the Mariners this season, including 2 starts as an “opener,” while posting a record of 0-2 with a 3.92 ERA (18 ER, 41.1 IP). The 6-foot-1, 205-pound, right-hander struck out 39 and walked 21 while allowing 3 home runs. From April 11 – June 1, he posted a 1.50 ERA (3 ER, 18.0 IP) with 23 strikeouts and 6 walks in 20 relief appearances. Since June 3, he has posted a 4.74 ERA (10 ER, 19.0 IP) across 22 games, including 2 starts as an “opener.”

Gearrin signed with Seattle as a free agent on Jan. 10, 2019. In parts of 8 Major League seasons with Atlanta (2011-13), San Francisco (2015-18), Texas (2018), Oakland (2018) and Seattle (2019), he is 12-11 with a 3.59 ERA (115 ER, 288.0 IP) in 318 career appearances (2 starts). He was originally selected by the Braves in the 4th round of the 2007 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on April 25, 2011 at San Diego.
