Mariners select RHP Logan Gilbert, OF Jarred Kelenic and RHP Paul Sewald from Triple-A Tacoma

SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Logan Gilbert, RHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Jarred Kelenic, OF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Paul Sewald, RHP, selected from Triple-A Tacoma.
  • Aaron Fletcher, LHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game, May 12).
  • Wyatt Mills, RHP, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game, May 12)
  • Taylor Trammell, OF, optioned to Triple-A Tacoma (post-game, May 12).
  • Nick Margevicius, LHP, transferred to 60-day Injured List (thoracic outlet syndrome).
  • Ljay Newsome, RHP, transferred to 60-day Injured List (UCL injury).
  • Braden Bishop, OF, designated for assignment.

Seattle’s Major League, 40-man, roster remains full at 40 players.

Gilbert (#36), Kelenic (#10) and Sewald (#37) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s game (7:10 pm PT) vs. Cleveland.

Gilbert, 24, is scheduled to start tonight’s game. It will be his Major League debut. He made 1 start with Triple-A Tacoma this season, earning the win on May 7 vs. El Paso, while tossing 5.0 innings and allowing only 1 run with 5 strikeouts. He appeared in 1 Cactus League game this spring, holding the Angels to 1 run over 2.0 innings pitched with 4 strikeouts. Gilbert is rated as the No. 28 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 4 prospect in the Mariners organization.

Gilbert spent the 2020 season at the Mariners Alternate Training Site in Tacoma. In 2019, he was one of the most effective pitchers in the minor leagues. In 26 combined starts between Class-A West Virginia (5 GS), High-A Modesto (12 GS) and Double-A Arkansas (9 GS), he went 10-5 with a 2.13 ERA (32 Er, 135.0 IP) with 33 walks and 165 strikeouts, while limiting opponents to a .198 (95x481) average. Among all minor league pitchers (min. 125.0 IP), he ranked 3rd in ERA (2.13), 5th in average (.198) and T7th in strikeouts (165). Following the season, he received the Jamie Moyer Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award.

Gilbert was selected by Seattle in the 1st round (14th overall) of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Stetson University (DeLand, FL). He is 1 of 4 Stetson alumni currently in the Major Leagues, joining Jacob deGrom, Corey Kluber and Patrick Mazeika. In 27 career minor league starts in the Mariners organization (2019 & 2021), the right-hander is 11-5 with a 2.12 ERA (33 ER, 140.0 IP) with 99 hits allowed, 33 walks and 170 strikeouts.

Kelenic (KELL-nick), 21, is batting .370 (10x27) with 6 runs, 1 double, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 2 walks and 2 stolen bases in 6 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound, outfielder is rated as the No. 4 overall prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 1 in the Mariners organization. He will make his Major League debut with his first appearance with the Mariners.

Kelenic spent the 2020 season at the Mariners Alternate Training Site in Tacoma. In 2019, he was named Ken Griffey Jr. Minor League Hitter of the Year after batting .291 (192x443) with 80 runs scored, 31 doubles, 5 triples, 23 home runs, 68 RBI, 3 HBP, 50 walks and 20 stolen bases in 117 games in his first full season combined between Class-A West Virginia (50 G), High-A Modesto (46 G) and Double-A Arkansas (21 G). He was 1 of 3 prospects (also: Justin Dunn & Evan White) to represent the Mariners in the 21st annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Kelenic, a native of Waukesha, WI, participated in both the Perfect Game All-America Classic and the Under Armour All-America Baseball Game in 2017. He played for Team USA 18U in 2016 and 2017, including when he was named MVP after leading Team USA to a gold medal in the 2016 Pan American Games.

Kelenic was acquired by the Mariners from the Mets along with Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak, Gerson Bautista and Justin Dunn in exchange for Robinson Canó, Edwin Díaz and cash considerations on Dec. 3, 2018. He was originally selected by the Mets with the 6th overall pick in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Waukesha West High School (WI), becoming the 7th Wisconsin native to ever be selected in the first round. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 3 minor league seasons in the Mets (2018) and Mariners (2019 & 2021) organizations, batting .293 (202x690) with 130 runs, 42 doubles, 11 triples, 31 home runs, 117 RBI, 79 walks and 37 stolen bases in 179 games.

Sewald, 30, began the season at the Mariners Alternate Training Site before being assigned to Triple-A Tacoma, where he has appeared in 2 games (1 start) for the Rainiers, going 0-0 with a 0.00 (0 ER, 4.1 IP) ERA in 4.1 innings of work, while allowing 3 hits and striking out 10 batters without allowing a walk.

Sewald was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 10th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Diego. The 6-foot-3 right-hander made his Major League debut with New York-NL on Apr. 8, 2017 vs. Miami. The Mariners signed Sewald to a minor league contract on Jan. 8, 2021 with an invite to Major League spring training. Overall, he has made 68 career Major League appearances with New York-NL (2017-20), going 1-14 with a 5.50 ERA (90 ER, 147.1 IP) with 51 walks and 151 strikeouts.

Fletcher, 25, was recalled from the Alternate Training Site on May 4. He is rated as the No. 18 prospect in the Mariners organization according to MLB Pipeline. The 6-foot, 220-pound, left-hander has appeared in 3 games with the Mariners this season, allowing 4 ER over 2.2 IP with 1 strikeout.

Fletcher was acquired by the Mariners from the Washington Nationals along with Elvis Alvarado (rhp) and Taylor Guilbeau (lhp) in exchange for Roenis Elías (lhp) and Hunter Strickland (rhp) on July 31, 2019. He was originally selected by the Nationals in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Houston. He made his Major League debut with the Mariners on Aug. 22, 2020 vs. TEX, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning with 1 strikeout. Overall, he appeared in 6 games during the 2020 season, going 0-0 with a 12.46 ERA (6 ER, 4.1 IP) with 7 walks and 7 strikeouts.

Mills, 26, made his Major League debut on May 1 vs. Los Angeles-AL, tossing 1.0 scoreless inning. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound, right-hander has appeared in 5 games with the Mariners this season, going 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA (4 ER, 4.2 IP) with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

The Spokane, Washington native attended Gonzaga University and was drafted by Seattle in the 3rd round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 3 minor league seasons (2017-19), Mills is 10-6 with 25 saves and a 3.57 ERA (50 ER, 126.0 IP), walking 39 and striking out 154. He was added to the 40-man roster on Nov. 20, 2020.

Trammell, 23, made his Major League debut on Opening Day (April 1) vs. San Francisco. He has appeared in 27 games with the Mariners this season, batting .157 (13x83) with 12 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 11 RBI, 10 walks and 2 stolen bases. He is rated as the No. 6 prospect in the Mariners organization (No. 86 overall) according to MLB Pipeline.

Trammell was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 1st round (35th overall) of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Mount Paran Christian School (GA). He was traded to the Padres as part of a 3-team trade on July 31, 2019. The 6-foot-2, 213-pound outfielder was acquired by the Mariners from San Diego on Aug. 31, 2020, along with Ty France (inf), Andrez Munoz (rhp) and Luis Torrens (c) in exchange for Austin Nola (c), Austin Adams (rhp) and Dan Altavilla (rhp. Overall, he has appeared in parts of 4 minor league seasons with Cincinnati (2016-19) and San Diego (2019), batting .270 (419x1552) with 251 runs, 64 doubles, 24 triples, 33 home runs, 195 RBI, 219 walks and 110 stolen bases in 426 minor league games.

Margevicius (mahr-GAV-a-chiss), 24, was placed on the 10-day IL on April 26 with left shoulder inflammation. He has made 5 appearances (3 starts) for the Mariners this season, going 0-2 with an 8.25 ERA (11 ER, 12.0 IP) with 13 hits allowed, 7 walks and 12 strikeouts. He started yesterday’s series finale at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox (0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO), leaving the game in the first inning.

In 3 Major League seasons, Margevicius is 4-11 with a 6.12 ERA (75 ER, 110.1 IP) with 124 hits allowed, 40 walks and 90 strikeouts in 32 games (22 starts). The left-hander made his Mariners debut on July 27, 2020 (1.0 IP in relief at HOU) after he was selected off waivers by Seattle from the San Diego Padres on January 24, 2020.

Margevicius was originally selected by San Diego in the 7th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Rider University (New Jersey). This marks his first stint on the Injured List in his Major League career.

Newsome, 24, was placed on the 10-day IL on May 9 with right elbow inflammation. He is 1-1 with a 7.98 ERA (13 ER, 14.2 IP) with 3 walks and 16 strikeouts in 7 games (1 start) with Seattle this season. The right-hander began the season at the Alternate Training Site and was recalled on April 7. Newsome recorded his first Major League win on April 18 at Houston (2.0 IP, 1 SO).

He made his MLB debut with Seattle on Aug. 20, 2020 and in 12 career games (5 starts), he’s compiled a 1-2 record with a 6.53 ERA (22 ER, 30.1 IP) with 4 walks and 25 strikeouts.

He was originally drafted by Seattle in the 26th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of Chopticon (MD) High School. He has appeared in 5 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization (2015-c), going 30-32 with a 4.11 ERA (228 ER, 499.2 IP) with 62 walks and 472 strikeouts in 99 career appearances (91 starts). In 2019, he was a Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star with High-A Modesto, while also receiving Player of the Week honors for the week of May 26 and Player of the Month honors in April.

Bishop, 27, began the season at the Mariners Alternate Training Site and was recalled on April 7. He was optioned back to the Alternate Training Site on April 20 after appearing in 7 games, batting .250 (1x4) with 1 run scored.

Bishop made his Major League debut with the Mariners on March 21, 2019 against the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo, Japan. The Woodland, CA, native has appeared in parts of 5 minor league seasons in the Mariners organization, batting .290 (488x1685) with 289 runs, 90 doubles, 7 triples, 24 home runs, 177 RBI, 165 walks and 51 stolen bases in 417 games. Bishop was the Mariners 3rd round selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Washington.
