FLUSHING, N.Y., December 1, 2023 – The New York Mets announced today that the club has signed All-Star right-handed pitcher Luis Severino to a one-year contract.

Severino, 29, appeared in 19 games (18 starts) for the Yankees last season, posting a 6.65 ERA (66 ER/89.1 IP). From 2015-2022, Severino held a 3.39 ERA (240 ER/638.0 IP) and 1.12 WHIP, each the sixth-best mark in the American League (min. 600.0 IP). His 788 career strikeouts rank fourth among active Dominican pitchers. His fastball velocity (96.4 mph) ranked in the 88th percentile in the majors last season.

“Luis will be a valuable addition to our staff and a quality member of the rotation,” Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said. “As a two-time All-Star, he has shown he has what it takes to pitch in New York in big moments and we look forward to having him on the mound in Queens.”

The eight-year major league veteran has twice been named an American League All-Star (2017 and 2018). He was an AL Cy Young finalist in 2017, finishing third in the vote after going 14-6 in 31 starts with a 2.98 ERA (64 ER/193.1 IP), a career-best 230 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP, holding opponents to a .204 average. In 2018, Severino again finished in the top-10 in AL Cy Young balloting as he ranked eighth in the AL with 220 strikeouts and was third in the league with 19 wins. He was also the fastest Yankee to record 500 career strikeouts, accomplishing the feat in the 85th game of his career.

Severino underwent Tommy John surgery in February of 2020, missed the 2020 season and returned in September 2021, making four scoreless relief appearances with eight strikeouts in 6.0 IP.

The Sabana de la Mar, Dominican Republic native owns a career 54-37 record with a 3.79 ERA (306 ER/727.1 IP) across 141 starts in eight seasons with the New York Yankees (2015-2023).
