Miami Marlins sign fourth-overall Draft pick JJ Bleday

Club also Signs Competitive Balance Pick Kameron Misner, 12th-Rounder Chris Mokma

July 12th, 2019

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced the signing of first-round draft pick JJ Bleday, an outfielder out of Vanderbilt University who was taken fourth overall in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The club also announced the signings of OF Kameron Misner (Competitive Balance Round A, #35 overall) and RHP Chris Mokma (Round 12, #351) ahead of today’s deadline for signing 2019 draft picks.

Miami signed 31 of its 41 selections in its 2019 Draft class, including its top 19 picks.

Bleday, 21, capped his three-year career at Vanderbilt with a College World Series championship last month. For his career with the Commodores, he batted .328 with a .471 on-base percentage in 154 regular season games, with 26 doubles, 31 home runs, and 104 RBI. He walked 120 times, and struck out just 102 times. In his junior season this year, including the SEC tournament and CWS, he batted .347 with 82 runs scored, 14 doubles, a triple, 27 home runs, and 72 RBI. He led all Division 1 players in home runs this year.

He was rated by MLB.com as the best outfield prospect in the 2019 Draft. Bleday was named 2019 SEC Player of the Year, and was a finalist for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award, which is presented to the nation’s best amateur baseball player.

The Marlins selected Misner with the first pick in Competitive Balance Round A. Misner, 21, was rated by Baseball America as the sixth-best outfield prospect (26th overall) and has “the best all-around tools among college players in this MLB Draft,” according to Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline. During his three years at Missouri, he hit .301 (164x544) with 31 doubles, four triples, 21 home runs, 91 RBI, and 109 walks. This year, his junior season, he posted a .286 (59x206) average with 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 32 RBI, 54 walks and a .440 on-base percentage in 57 games.
