Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers named the National League Reliever of the Month Presented by The Hartford; Mike Mayers of the Los Angeles Angels named the American League Reliever of the Month Presented by The Hartford

Rookie Devin Williams of the Milwaukee Brewers has been voted the National League Reliever of the Month Presented by The Hartford for September, and Mike Mayers of the Los Angeles Angels has been voted the American League Reliever of the Month Presented by The Hartford for September. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Williams earned his first career monthly award and is the first Brewers winner since his bullpen-mate Brent Suter in September 2019. The Brewers have collected a league-best six Reliever of the Month Awards since 2018, also received by Josh Hader (April-June 2018), Corey Knebel (September 2018) and the aforementioned Suter. Mayers also claimed his first career Reliever of the Month Award and became just the second Angels pitcher to accomplish the feat, joining Francisco Rodríguez, who won a pair in August 2006 and June 2008.

• Logged a perfect 1-0 record over nine appearances for the Brewers. Tallied 24 strikeouts while permitting just three walks and four hits across 13.0 scoreless innings pitched.

• Allowed his only earned run of the season on July 27th against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since that game, tossed 24.2 consecutive innings over 20 appearances without allowing an earned run.

• Became the second pitcher in franchise history to not allow a run while notching at least 24 strikeouts in a month, joining Knebel, who did so in September 2018.

• Featuring an incredible changeup, finished his outstanding rookie season with a 4-1 record and a 0.33 ERA over 27.0 innings of work. Became just the third rookie pitcher in Major League history to record a season in which he posted an ERA of 0.50-or-better with a minimum of 25.0 innings, joining Kevin Siegrist (2013) and Buck O’Brien (1911).

• Made 14 appearances for the Angels, logging a perfect 2-0 record with 25 strikeouts and a pair of saves. Recorded an 0.98 ERA on five walks and seven hits across 18.1 innings.

• Posted a 14-appearance scoreless streak from August 31st-September 23rd, holding the opposition to an .081 batting average to go along with a 26:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

• Did not allow a single hit across nine scoreless outings from September 5th-21st. Notched 17 punchouts while permitting just a pair of walks over 13.2 innings of relief.

• Logged at least one strikeout in each of his final 11 appearances, including seven multi-strikeout performances. Tallied three strikeouts in consecutive appearances from September 19th-21st.

Others receiving votes for AL Reliever of the Month included Codi Heuer (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 15 SO, 12.2 IP) of the Chicago White Sox; All-Star Brad Hand (2-0, 0.79 ERA, 16 SO, 6 SV) of the Cleveland Indians; All-Star Aroldis Chapman (10 G, 0.93 ERA, 20 SO, 3 BB) of the New York Yankees; and Jesse Hahn (1-0, 0.77 ERA, 12 SO, 11.2 IP) of the Kansas City Royals.

The National League Reliever of the Month presented by The Hartford, Devin Williams, and the American League Reliever of the Month presented by The Hartford, Mike Mayers, will each receive a specially designed plaque, suitably engraved, for their accomplishments. The Hartford, the Official Business Insurance & Employee Benefits Sponsor of MLB, has presented baseball’s annual Relievers of the Year Awards, named in honor of Mariano Rivera (American League) and Trevor Hoffman (National League), since 2015.
