Orioles announce 2022 Major League coaching and clubhouse staff

The Orioles today announced their 2022 Major League Coaching and Clubhouse Staff. The club has named MATT BORGSCHULTE and RYAN FULLER Co-Hitting Coaches. FREDI GONZÁLEZ shifts from Major League Coach to Bench Coach and JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ shifts from Assistant Hitting Coach to Major League Coach. All other coaches remain in their same positions: TIM COSSINS as Major League Field Coordinator/Catching Instructor, DARREN HOLMES as Assistant Pitching Coach, CHRIS HOLT as Pitching Coach/Director of Pitching, TONY MANSOLINO as Third Base Coach, and ANTHONY SANDERS as First Base Coach.

Borgschulte (BORG-shult-ee), 31, joins the Orioles from the Minnesota Twins organization where he spent the last four seasons. He spent the 2021 season as the hitting coach for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, his first full season at the Triple-A level. He served as the hitting coach for Single-A Fort Myers in 2019 and for the GCL Twins in 2018. He began his professional coaching career in 2017 with the Single-A Palm Beach Cardinals in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Prior to joining the Cardinals, he coached at Southwest Missouri State University from 2015-16 and spent 2014 as a volunteer coach at his alma mater, Drury University in Springfield, Mo., where he introduced in-depth video analysis for hitting.

Fuller, 31, was promoted from the Double-A Bowie Baysox. He spent the 2021 season as the Orioles Full Season Hitting Coordinator, while also serving as the hitting coach for Bowie. Under his leadership, the Baysox led the league in runs scored per game (5.23), ranked second in home runs (170), tied for third in OPS (.760), and fourth in OBP (.332) and slugging (.428). Fuller joined the Orioles organization in 2020 after being named Class-A Delmarva’s hitting coach. Prior to joining the organization, he was a hitting instructor at Power in Training (The PIT) in Connecticut. He played professionally for one season as an infielder for the AZL Diamondbacks after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012. Fuller attended the University of Connecticut for two seasons after transferring from NJCAA UConn Avery Point.

BRANDON HYDE enters his fourth season as Manager after being named the 20th manager in Orioles history prior to the 2019 campaign. Cossins returns for his fourth season as Major League Field Coordinator/Catching Instructor and his 21st as a manager, coach, or Major League bullpen catcher. González enters his third season with the Orioles organization and 33rd as a professional coach or manager, 10 of which were as a Major League manager. Hernández enters his fourth season on the Major League staff and 13th as a coach in the Orioles organization. Holmes enters his third season with the Orioles and second as Assistant Pitching Coach after being promoted to the position following the 2020 season, while Holt enters his second season as the Orioles Pitching Coach/Director of Pitching and fourth in the organization. Mansolino enters his second season as the club’s Third Base Coach and Sanders enters his third season as First Base Coach. Orioles Bullpen Catchers BEN CARHART and JOEL POLANCO will each return in 2022, with Carhart entering his third season and Polanco entering his fourth.

The Major League training staff will once again be led by BRIAN EBEL, who returns for his fifth season as the Orioles Head Athletic Trainer and 38th year with the organization overall. MARK SHIRES, entering his 24th year with the organization, and PATRICK WESLEY, entering his 19th year with the organization, each return for their fifth seasons as Assistant Athletic Trainers, while ADRIAN PETTAWAY returns as Massage Therapist. Additionally, CHRIS POOLE has been named Assistant to the Head Athletic Trainer and KYLE CORRICK has been named Physical Therapist. Poole enters his 10th year in the organization after serving as the club’s Secondary Compliance Officer for health and safety protocols in 2021 and Primary Compliance Officer in 2020. Corrick enters his fourth year in the organization after serving as Rehabilitation Coordinator for the past three seasons, working with both Major League and minor league players on rehab assignment.

The club has also announced that TREY WIEDMAN has been named Strength Coach and JUSTIN BUCKO has been named Assistant Strength Coach. Wiedman spent the past two years as Triple-A Norfolk’s Strength and Conditioning Coach after being named to the position in 2020. Prior to joining the Orioles organization, he had spent three seasons as the Houston Astros Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach. Bucko joins the Orioles from the Cincinnati Reds organization, where he spent the past five seasons, most recently as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Triple-A Louisville Bats.

The Baseball Operations department has also made the following changes: BILL WILKES shifts from Manager, Advance Scouting Operations to Manager, Major League Strategy; BEN SUSSMAN-HYDE has been promoted from Coordinator, Major League Video/Advance Scouting to Manager, Major League Video/Run Creation Strategist; and RYAN KLIMEK has been promoted from Coordinator, Major League Scouting to Manager, Pitching Strategy.

Additionally, the club has named FRED TYLER Home Clubhouse and Equipment Manager and ANDREW GUINART Visiting Clubhouse Manager. A Baltimore native, Tyler began working around the club as a teenager and spent the past 37 seasons as the Visiting Clubhouse Manager. He also assisted with equipment and clubhouse needs during Spring Training and accompanied the team on some road trips. Guinart joined the Orioles in 2010 when the club relocated their Spring Training operations to his hometown of Sarasota, Fla. He worked in the Major League clubhouse at Ed Smith Stadium during Spring Training and assisted with minor league operations during the summer months before relocating to Baltimore in 2012 to work in the home clubhouse.
