PEORIA, Ariz. – The San Diego Padres have acquired left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea and right-hander Aaron Holiday from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-hander Adrian Martinez and infielder Euribiel Angeles, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

In 2021, Manaea, 30, posted career highs in innings pitched (179.1), starts (32) and strikeouts (194), while going 11-10, his fifth consecutive season with a winning record. The Valparaiso, Ind. native tied for the American League lead in starts, ranked fourth in total pitches (2,980), eighth in innings pitched, ninth in opponents OPS (.719) and on-base percentage (.304) and 10th in ERA, slugging (.415) and batting average (.255). He was the only AL pitcher and one of five in the Majors with two shutouts, and joined Gerrit Cole as one of two AL pitchers with two complete games. The 6-5, 245-pound left-hander tossed a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox on April 21, 2018, striking out 10 and walking two in Oakland’s 3-0 victory. The Red Sox entered the contest with a .894 winning percentage (17-2), the highest of any team to be no-hit in MLB history. The Indiana State University product is 50-41 with a 3.86 ERA (312 ER, 727.0 IP) across 129 games (128 starts) in six Major League seasons with Oakland. He was originally drafted in the first round (34th overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by the Kansas City Royals, and was traded to the Athletics at the 2015 trade deadline in the deal that sent Ben Zobrist to the Royals.

Holiday, 21, made his professional debut in 2021 with the Rookie-Level Arizona Complex League Athletics, going 2-0 across three scoreless relief outings (5.2 IP), allowing three hits while striking out eight and walking two. The 6-3, 205-pound right-hander was drafted in the 13th round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of Old Dominion University, where he compiled a 10-3 record and a 2.95 ERA (26 ER, 79.1 IP) across three seasons for the Monarchs. In 2021, the Bear, Del. native pitched in 20 games (19 relief outings), going 4-2 with a 3.21 ERA (10 ER, 28.0 IP) and one save, while limiting the opposition to a .150 average. He earned the win in the Conference USA Championship game over Louisiana Tech, tossing 1.1 shutout innings, and earned the save in ODU's 2-1 win over South Carolina in the NCAA Regionals, tossing 2.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts. In his final seven appearances, he struck out 19 across 9.2 frames. Following his collegiate career, he tossed 5.0 shutout innings with nine strikeouts and two saves in the Cape Cod League for the Harwich Mariners.
