The Phillies have named Juan Castro the major league infield coach, the club announced today.

Castro, 47, spent the 2019 season as the Phillies’ minor league infield coordinator. Prior to his time with Philadelphia, Castro spent several years with the Los Angeles Dodgers as special assistant to the general manager, minor league infield coordinator and major league quality assurance coach for two seasons (2016-17).

A native of Mexico, Castro also worked as the director of operations for the Tijuana Toros in the Mexican League, managed Cibao in the Mexican Pacific League and worked as a coach for Team Mexico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Currently, Castro is managing Team Mexico in the Premier 12 tournament, an international event serving as a qualifier for the Olympic Games.

Castro played professionally for 21 seasons (1991-2011), which included parts of 17 years in the major leagues for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-99; 2009, 2010-11), Cincinnati Reds (2000-04; 2006-08), Baltimore Orioles (2008), Minnesota Twins (2005-06) and Phillies (2010). In 1,103 major league games, he appeared at all four infield positions. Castro notably started the final out of the late Roy Halladay’s perfect game against the Florida Marlins in Miami on May 29, 2010.

As previously announced, the Phillies coaching staff is comprised of Paco Figueroa (first base), Jim Gott (bullpen), Pedro Guerrero (assistant hitting), Dave Lundquist (assistant pitching), Bryan Price (pitching), Rob Thomson (bench), Dusty Wathan (third base), Craig Driver (bullpen catcher/receiving) and Bob Stumpo (bullpen catcher/catching). The role of hitting coach is the final coaching position left to be filled.
