Phillies place LHP Alvarado on 15-day IL, reinstate Bellatti

May 10th, 2023

Prior to today’s game, the Phillies placed left-handed pitcher José Alvarado on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 5/8) with left elbow inflammation. Right-handed pitcher Andrew Bellatti was recalled from his rehab assignment with single-A Clearwater and reinstated from the 15-day injured list (right triceps tendinitis).

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Alvarado, 27, has converted five of his seven save opportunities this season, while 12 of his 14 appearances were scoreless. From Sept. 13, 2022-April 18, 2023, he struck out multiple batters in 14 straight games (34 SO total), a club record for most consecutive relief appearances with multiple strikeouts.

Originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent on March 13, 2012, Alvarado was acquired by the Phillies in a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Dec. 29, 2020.

Bellatti, 31, threw 2.0 scoreless innings across two rehab appearances this month, scattering one hit, one walk and four strikeouts.

He was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2009 MLB draft and was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Nov. 19, 2021.
