Phillies place Ortiz on 15-day injured list; recall Nelson from Lehigh Valley

March 31st, 2024

Prior to today’s game against the Atlanta Braves, the Phillies placed right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz on the 15-day injured list with a left ankle sprain. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, right-handed pitcher Nick Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Ortiz, 28, made his first career Opening Day roster this year and tossed 0.2 innings in his season debut yesterday before being removed from the game. Originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round (30th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft, Ortiz was claimed off waivers by the Phillies from the San Francisco Giants on Nov. 9, 2022.

Nelson, 28, had yet to appear in a game for the IronPigs this year, but went 2-0 with a 6.23 ERA (6 ER, 8.2 IP) and two strikeouts across five appearances (1 start) in major league spring training. He was previously recalled by the Phillies on 10/1/23 for his lone major league stint last season and allowed one earned run in a career-high 5.1 innings, the most innings pitched by a Phillies reliever in 2023. Nelson was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the New York Yankees on Nov. 19, 2021. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
