The Phillies have signed switch-hitting infielder Johan Camargo to a one-year contract, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced tonight.

Camargo, who will turn 28 in two weeks, spent the majority of the 2021 season with Atlanta’s triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett, where he batted .326 with 24 doubles, four triples, 19 home runs, 67 RBI, 47 walks, 70 runs, a .401 on-base percentage, .557 slugging percentage and .958 OPS in 104 games. Among all triple-A players, Camargo ranked fourth in batting average, tied for fourth in total bases (215), fifth in on-base percentage, sixth in OPS, tied for sixth in hits (126) and 10th in slugging percentage. He also appeared in 15 regular season games with Atlanta and another four in the postseason.

A native of Panama, Camargo is a veteran of five major league seasons with Atlanta (2017-21), originally signing with the club as an amateur free agent in 2010. In 364 career games, he has batted .257 with 68 doubles, four triples, 34 home runs, 144 RBI, a .315 on-base percentage and .423 slugging percentage. He has appeared in games at third base (186), shortstop (69), second base (38), left field (12), right field (5) and first base (2).

To make room for Camargo on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Adonis Medina has been designated for assignment.
