Pirates acquire three players from San Diego Padres

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder Tucupita Marcano, outfielder Jack Suwinski and right-handed pitcher Michell Miliano from the San Diego Padres in exchange for infielder Adam Frazier and cash.

The 21-year-old Marcano, who appeared in 25 games earlier this season with San Diego and was a member of the team’s Opening Day roster, is currently rated as the Padres’ fifth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He entered the 2021 campaign ranked as the Padres’ No. 1 international prospect by MLB Pipeline and as the organization’s third-best infield prospect behind C.J. Abrams and Ha-Seong Kim according to Baseball America.

Marcano entered today hitting .272 (46-for-169) with seven doubles, two triples, six home runs, 26 RBI and an .811 OPS in 44 games this season with Triple-A El Paso. He has made 11 appearances apiece this season at shortstop, second base, left field and right field for El Paso.

The 22-year-old Suwinski is currently tied for third among all Double-A Central League hitters in home runs (15), while also ranking fourth in OPS (.949), fifth in slugging percentage (.551) and total bases (119), sixth in on-base percentage (.398) and tied for seventh in extra base hits (27) while spending the entire season with San Antonio. He also ranks fourth among all Double-A Central League hitters in Weighted On-Base Average (.416) and tied for fourth in Weighted Runs Created (52).

Suwinski, who was selected by San Diego in the 15th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, also entered today with the second-most home runs (15) by all Padres minor leaguers this season, trailing only Patrick Kivlehan (17).

The 21-year-old Miliano has spent a majority of the season with Lake Elsinore, where he currently ranks sixth among all Low-A West League relievers in strikeouts (52) despite being promoted to High-A Fort Wayne on July 14. He has posted a 2-2 record with two saves, a 3.60 ERA (30.0ip/12er), 59 strikeouts and .160 batting average against in 22 combined relief appearances between Lake Elsinore and Fort Wayne
