The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have signed right-handed pitcher Logan Hofmann, the club’s fifth round selection (138th overall) in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft.

The 20-year-old Hofmann earned second-team All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball in 2020 after not allowing an earned run in 28.0 innings of work while also recording 38 strikeouts in four appearances (four starts) as a junior at Northwestern State (LA) University.

“We are excited to add Logan to the Pirates organization,” said Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington. “Logan has performed well at every level of amateur baseball and has a strong combination of stuff, control, feel for pitching and competitiveness. We look forward to seeing Logan in a Pirates uniform.”

Prior to pitching at Northwestern State, Hofmann spent the previous two years at Colby (KS) Community College, where he set the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference career strikeout record (230). During his sophomore season in 2019, he finished fourth in the NJCAA with 128 strikeouts while taking home third-team All-America honors. Following the 2019 season, Hofmann pitched for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod League, where he went 3-1 with one save, a 3.54 ERA and 27 strikeouts while pitching in the league’s All-Star Game.

Hofmann, who graduated from Muenster School in Saskatchewan, Canada, became the highest player to be drafted out of Saskatchewan, edging out James Avery, who was selected in the fifth round (152nd overall) in the 2005 draft.
