The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have signed 2021 Competitive Balance B round selection Lonnie White Jr., the 64th overall selection in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft.

The 18-year-old White was rated as the 32nd-best player in the 2021 draft by Baseball America. He was also rated by FanGraphs as having the second-best present/projected speed in the draft behind Will Taylor.

White was a three-sport athlete at Malvern Preparatory (PA) School, where he hit .395 with 11 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 25 RBI and 26 stolen bases as a senior this past season.

White was also a 2021 first-team All-American selection by Collegiate Baseball while also being rated by Perfect Game as the 44th-best player (10th among all outfielders) in the class of 2021. Perfect Game also rated him as the No. 2 player in the state of Pennsylvania in the class of 2021.

During his final season of football at Malvern Prep in 2021, White also caught 17 passes for 369 yards and five touchdowns in four games.

White, who will begin his pro career in the Florida Complex League, was signed by Pirates scout Dan Radcliff.

The Pirates have now signed four of the top 32 players from this year’s draft according to Baseball America (the publication ranked Henry Davis fourth, Bubba Chandler 20th, Anthony Solometo 28th and Lonnie White Jr. 32nd).
