Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has acquired right-handed pitcher Albert Abreu and left-handed pitcher Robby Ahlstrom from the New York Yankees in exchange for catcher Jose Trevino. Abreu is added to the Rangers’ Major League roster, which remains at the 40-man limit.

Abreu, 26, went 2-0 with a 5.15 ERA (21 ER/36.2 IP), one save, and 35 strikeouts across 28 relief appearances over multiple stints with the Yankees in 2021, his first extended big league action after making his Major League debut in 2020. Though he has pitched exclusively as a reliever in the Majors, the right-hander has worked primarily in a starting role over seven seasons in the minors, where he owns a career 20-30 record, 3.77 ERA (191 ER/455.2 IP), and 9.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings figure in 115 games/87 starts.

Abreu was rated as the sixth-best prospect in the Yankees farm system by MLB Pipeline in 2019 and the no. 77 overall prospect in the game by Baseball America in 2018. He entered 2022 as the no. 31 prospect in the NYY organization according to BA. The Dominican Republic native was originally acquired by the Yankees from Houston, where he signed as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 5, 2013, along with RHP Jorge Guzman in exchange for C Brian McCann on Nov. 17, 2016. Abreu has been scoreless in four Grapefruit League appearances for the Yankees this spring: 4.2 IP, 6 SO, 0 BB.

Ahlstrom, 22, was selected by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of Oregon. The left-hander has yet to make his professional debut after posting a 16-11 record, 3.51 ERA (73 ER/187.0 IP), and 171 strikeouts over three seasons with the Ducks (2018-2021). He was a First-Team All-Pac-12 Conference selection as a junior in 2021, going 9-3 with a 2.50 ERA (25 ER/90.0 IP), 92 SO/16 BB and a .231 opp. BA. A Eugene native, Ahlstrom was the second University of Oregon product taken in the 2021 MLB Draft behind outfielder Aaron Zavala, who the Rangers selected in the second round (38th overall).

Trevino batted .239 with 5 home runs and 30 RBI last season, making a team-high 81 starts at catcher. The Corpus Christi native has spent his entire eight-year professional career in the Texas organization since being drafted by the club in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Highly active in the community during his time with the Rangers, Trevino was the team’s nominee for the 2021 Roberto Clemente Award and honored as the recipient of the 2021 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award and 2020 Richard Durrett Hardest Working Man Award as presented by the DFW Chapter of the BBWAA.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with right-handed pitcher Jonathan Hernández on the 60-day Injured List.
