Rangers activate OF Hunter Pence, select contract of RHP Taylor Guerrieri from Nashville

LHP Jesse Biddle placed on injured list, OF Willie Calhoun optioned to Nashville

July 16th, 2019

Arlington, Texas – The Texas Rangers today announced the following four transactions:

• Outfielder Hunter Pence activated from 10-day injured list

• Right-handed pitcher Taylor Guerrieri (#46) contract selected from Triple-A Nashville

• Left-handed pitcher Jesse Biddle placed on 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, with left shoulder fatigue

• Outfielder Willie Calhoun optioned to Nashville.

Pence will be seeking his first action with Texas since June 16. He has batted .294/.353/.608/.962 with 15 HR and 48 RBI in 55 games with the Rangers this season. Despite missing nearly a month on the 10-day injured list (June 17-July 15) with a right groin strain, Pence still ranks among the team leaders in both HR (T2nd) and RBI (T3rd). Earlier this month he was selected as the starting designated hitter for the American League All-Star team, but did not play in the game due to injury. It was Pence’s 4th career All-Star selection and first since 2014 with San Francisco.

Pence played 4 games on his most recent rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco, going 3-for-15 with a walk. He went 2-for-4 in last game on Sunday vs. Amarillo. Pence also played one game for Frisco on July 1, but was removed from the rehab assignment after re-aggravating the injury.

Guerrieri, 26, will be in uniform for tonight’s series opener against Arizona, seeking his Texas debut. The right-hander has spent the entire campaign with the Sounds, going 1-3 with a 3.47 ERA (14 ER/36.1 IP) over 23 games/2 games started. He has allowed one run over 14.1 innings with just one walk and 23 strikeouts in his last 8 outings since June 15. Guerrieri has held opponents to a .196/.226/.196/.422 slash line over that span. He last worked on Friday vs. New Orleans (1.2 IP, 1 R-0 ER).

Guerrieri signed with Texas as a minor league free agent on January 22. He made his Major League debut with the Blue Jays last season, posting a 4.66 ERA (5 ER/9.2 IP) over 9 relief appearances with the Jays in September. The Georgia native was originally selected by Tampa Bay with the 24th overall pick in the 2011 June Draft.

Biddle has allowed 8 R-7 ER over 5.1 IP in 4 relief appearances with Texas since he was received on a waiver claim from Seattle on June 28. He last pitched on Sunday vs. Houston. The first date Biddle would be eligible to return is July 25.

Calhoun has batted .277 (26-94) with 5 home runs and 13 RBI over 26 games with the Rangers this season. He made 17 starts for the club since returning from the injured list on June 17.

Following these transactions, the Rangers now have 40 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with five players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, LHP Taylor Hearn, LHP Yohander Méndez, LHP Jeffrey Springs, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
