Rangers decline 2021 club option on RHP Corey Kluber, RHP Luke Farrell assigned outright to Minors; RHP Ian Gibaut acquired by Minnesota on waiver claim

Kluber sustained season-ending injury in his lone appearance with Texas in 2020

October 30th, 2020

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following three transactions:

·  Right-handed pitcher Corey Kluber’s 2021 club option declined by Rangers, making him a free agent

·  Right-handed pitcher Luke Farrell assigned outright to minor leagues

·  Right-handed pitcher Ian Gibaut sent to Minnesota Twins on waiver claim

Kluber made his Rangers debut in a start on July 26 vs. Colorado, pitching 1.0 scoreless inning before leaving the game due to a Grade 2 tear of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder. While the injury did not require surgery, Kluber had platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy later that week and did not pitch again in 2020. His Texas debut remains his only MLB appearance since May 1, 2019 at Miami while with Cleveland. Kluber was acquired in a trade with Cleveland on December 15, 2019.

Farrell finished with no record and a 5.97 ERA (5 ER/5.1 IP) in 4 relief outings across two stints with Texas in 2020: Opening Day-August 5 and September 12. He made an Opening Day roster for the first time and also saw a stint on the Injured List from August 11-31 while at the Alternate Training Site.

Gibaut went 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA (9 ER/12.1 IP) over 14 relief appearances in his lone stint with the Rangers from July 23-August 26 this past season. He was tied for the team lead in relief appearances at the time he was optioned. He had 23 games with Texas over the past two seasons since being acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay on July 28, 2019.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers now have 32 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with three players (Brock Burke, Jose Leclerc, Joe Palumbo) on the 60-day Injured List.
