Rangers place RHP Jon Gray on 15-day injured list, select contract of RHP Jesus Tinoco from Round Rock

LHP Cody Bradford transferred from 15-day to 60-day Injured List

Philadelphia — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Thursday afternoon’s series finale against the Phillies in Philadelphia:

  • Right-handed pitcher Jon Gray placed on the 15-day Injured List, retroactive to May 22, with a right groin strain.
  • Right-handed pitcher Jesus Tinoco (#59) contract selected from Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Left-handed pitcher Cody Bradford transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day Injured List.

Gray exited his start on Tuesday at Philadelphia due to the groin issue. He has gone 2-2 with a 2.21 ERA (14 ER/57.0 IP) over 11 games/10 starts this season, ranking 5th in the American League in ERA. The first date that Gray would be eligible to return from the Injured List is June 6.

Tinoco, 29, has spent the season at Round Rock, going 1-1 with one save and a 3.80 ERA (9 ER/21.1 IP) over 15 relief appearances for the Express. Opposing batters in the Pacific Coast League have slashed .260/.348/.429/.777 (20-77) with 3 home runs, 10 walks, and 27 strikeouts. He has averaged 11.4 strikeouts per 9 innings this season. Tinoco over 5 appearances this month: 2.80 ERA (2 ER/8.2 IP), .172 (5-29) opponent batting average, 3 walks, 10 strikeouts. He last pitched on Sunday vs. Reno: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 18 pitches/12 strikes.

The Venezuela native was a non-roster invitee to Rangers Spring Training camp, compiling a 3.72 ERA (4 ER/9.2 IP) with 2 walks and 12 strikeouts over 8 relief appearances in Cactus League play. This will be his second stint with the Rangers, as he had no record and a 2.18 ERA (5 ER/20.2 IP) over 17 games/2 starts for Texas in 2022. His last big league outing was on October 4, 2022 vs. New York-AL (G2). Overall in his Major League career, Tinoco has gone 0-3 with a 4.05 ERA over 48 games/2 starts with Colorado (2019, 2020-21), Miami (2020), and Texas (2022).

Bradford was originally placed on the 15-day Injured list on April 14 with a low back strain. He went 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA (3 ER/19.1 IP) over 3 games/starts for the Rangers this season before the injury. The first date he would be eligible to return is June 13.

With these transactions, Texas remains at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with nine players on the 60-day Injured List: Cody Bradford, Brock Burke, Carson Coleman, Jacob deGrom, Justin Foscue, Josh Jung, Tyler Mahle, Austin Pruitt, and Max Scherzer.
