Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Monday night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels:

• Outfielder/first baseman Scott Heineman recalled from Triple-A Nashville • Right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez recalled from Triple-A Nashville • Right-handed pitcher Adrian Sampson placed on 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sunday, with lower back spasms • Right-handed pitcher David Carpenter designated for assignment

Heineman will be in his second stint with the Rangers, as he went 2-for-10 with a walk over 4 games/3 starts in his first career Major League action with Texas from August 2-7 before he was optioned to Nashville following the club’s doubleheader on August 7 at Cleveland. He hit a home run in his most recent game with Nashville on Sunday night against Omaha. Overall with the Sounds this season, Heineman has batted .340/.412/.553/.966 (54-159) with 8 home runs and 25 RBI in 42 games. He opened the year on the 60-day injured list following surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder on December 10, 2018. The Southern California native was selected by Texas in the 11th round of the 2015 June draft out of the University of Oregon.

Valdez has posted no record with a 3.86 ERA (5 ER/11.2 IP) over 9 appearances with Texas in his first Major League action. This will be his third big league stint in 2019, as he was also with the Rangers on June 8 and from July 3-August 1. His last appearance with Texas came on July 30 vs. Seattle (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO). Valdez has spent the balance of the season with Nashville, compiling a 1-7 record with a 5.20 ERA (42 ER/72.2 IP) over 22 games/13 starts for the Sounds. His last outing was on Saturday against Omaha (1.0 IP, 1 SO, 17 pitches).

Sampson has a 6-8 record with a 5.82 ERA over 29 games/15 starts for Texas this season. The first date he would be eligible to return is August 28.

The Rangers have seven days to release or outright Carpenter to the minor leagues. Carpenter has allowed 4 runs over 4 games and 3.1 innings spanning two stints with the Rangers this season (May 31-June 7, August 13-18) in his first Major League action since 2015.

Following these transactions, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with seven players on the 60-day injured list: LHP Jesse Biddle, RHP Luke Farrell, LHP Taylor Hearn, RHP Nate Jones, LHP Yohander Méndez, LHP Jeffrey Springs, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
