Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed second baseman Justin Foscue (first round, 14th overall) and outfielder Evan Carter (second round, 50th overall), the team’s first two selections in the 2020 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The 21-year-old Foscue (pronounced FOSS-Q) was selected in the first round on June 10. He played three seasons at Mississippi State University and was rated by Baseball America as the top college second baseman in the draft, this after beginning his college career at third base. He was the starting second baseman for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team last summer.

Over his three years at Mississippi State, the 6-foot, 203-pound Foscue batted .297 with 19 home runs and 96 RBI, and more walks (67) than strikeouts (57) over 141 games. As a sophomore in 2019, he slashed .331/.395/.564/.959 with 14 home runs and 60 RBI in 67 games, helping the Bulldogs reach the second round of the College World Series. The right-handed batter and thrower led the team in on-base percentage (.464), walks (15), and RBI (16) over 16 games during the shortened 2020 campaign.

The Alabama native was twice named Huntsville Player of the Year at Virgil Grissom High School, where he lettered four years in baseball and also played basketball.

Carter, 17, was selected in the draft’s second round on June 11. He was a four-year letterwinner at Elizabethton (Tenn.) High School as both an outfielder and pitcher. As a junior in 2019, he was named Super 22 Player of the Year, conference Pitcher of the Year, and earned first team All-State honors. Carter hit .324 with 4 home runs and 27 RBI that season while going 10-2 with a 1.34 ERA and six complete games on the mound, helping his team to a state tournament appearance.

Prior to signing with the Rangers, the left-handed batter and right-handed thrower had committed to play baseball at Duke University. Carter also played football at Elizabethton High School for coach Shawn Witten, the brother of fellow Elizabethton alum Jason Witten.

RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH UNDRAFTED PITCHER: Texas has also agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Aidan Curry, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound player from Fordham Prep High School in New York City. As a junior last season, Curry helped Fordham Prep to a 22-4 record and the 2019 CHSAA city championship title, the team's first since 2009. The 17-year-old also saw time in the outfield in addition to pitcher. A native of Ossining, N.Y., Curry had been committed to Bucknell University. In 2017, he was a member of the Ossining Little League team that won the New York state championship and advanced to the Little League World Series regionals.

Curry is the eighth undrafted player to agree to terms with the Rangers since the undrafted signing period began on Sunday morning.
