Rangers sign three players selected in 2021 MLB Draft

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the signings of three additional players selected in last month’s 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.

Agreeing to terms were the second round selection (38th overall in the Draft), outfielder Aaron Zavala, the 14th round pick catcher Tucker Mitchell, and the 18th round selection, right-handed pitcher Kyle Larsen.

With today’s signings, Texas has 18 of its 20 selections in the 2021 MLB Draft under contract. The deadline for signing 2021 draft picks was 4:00 p.m. CT today.

Zavala, 21, was named 2021 Pac-12 Player of the Year after batting .392/.525/.628/1.153 (78-199) with 9 home runs and 38 RBI as a senior at the University of Oregon, finishing with the nation’s 5th-highest on-base percentage. The 6-foot, 200-pound Oregon native also ranked among Division I leaders in walks (T6th, 50) while leading his conference in batting average. His 50 walks and 64 runs were program records for a single season. Oregon finished the 2021 season ranked as the no. 19 team in the country.

Zavala, a left-handed batter and right-handed thrower, prepped at South Salem High School in Salem, Oregon. He was named Oregon’s 6A Player of the Year and Greater Valley Conference Player of the Year as a senior in 2018, when he batted .561/.656/.939 with 6 home runs, 19 RBI, 19 doubles, 55 runs, and 29 walks.

C TUCKER MITCHELL (14th round, 404th overall) – Mitchell batted .382 with 9 home runs and 55 RBI this season at the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. The catcher, who began his college career at Florida Atlantic University, has been playing for the West Virginia Black Bears of the MLB Draft League this summer, where he is teammates with Texas fifth-round pick LHP Mitch Bratt. Mitchell is committed to North Carolina State University.

RHP KYLE LARSEN (18th round, 524th overall) – The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Larsen was drafted out of TNXL Academy in Ocoee, Fla. TNXL Academy is a baseball-centric school that plays outside the Florida High School Athletic Association and competes against junior colleges, Division II colleges, and high schools. Larsen is committed to the University of Florida.
