July 30th, 2021

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today acquired All-Star outfielder Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Aldo Ramirez.

To make room for Schwarber on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman for assignment.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Schwarber, 28, has played in 72 games with the Nationals this season, all in left field. The left-handed batter has hit .253 (67-for-265) with 25 home runs and a .910 OPS, and in 21 games since June 12 he has batted .338 (26-for-77) with 16 home runs. From June 19-29, he tied the major league record for most homers in a 10-game span (12), also setting the all-time record for most home runs as a leadoff hitter in a calendar month (15). Schwarber, who last appeared in a game on July 2, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain on July 3.

Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 2014 June Draft, Schwarber has appeared in 623 major league games with the Cubs (2015-20) and Nationals (2021). He has hit .233 (483-for-2,071) with 146 home runs and an .828 OPS, making 511 starts in left field, 30 at designated hitter, 15 at catcher, and two in right field. Schwarber helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series, appearing in five games against Cleveland and going 7-for-17 (.412) with a double and two RBI.

Ramirez, 20, has made eight starts for Low-A Salem this season, posting a 2.03 ERA (7 ER/31.0 IP) with 32 strikeouts. Signed by Boston out of the Mexican League in April 2018, the right-hander is 4-6 with a 2.88 ERA (39 ER/122.0 IP) in 32 professional outings (26 starts).

Workman, 32, has posted a 5.46 ERA (17 ER/28.0 IP) in 29 games this season between the Cubs and Red Sox. Selected by Boston in the second round of the 2010 June Draft, the two-time World Series champion was the only pitcher to appear in at least one Postseason game for the Red Sox in both 2013 and 2018. In 238 career appearances with the Red Sox, Workman is 25-16 with 20 saves and a 3.83 ERA (131 ER/308.0 IP).
