Red Sox agree to one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez

February 12th, 2021

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today signed left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez to a one-year contract for the 2021 season, with a club option for 2022. To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated right-handed pitcher Chris Mazza for assignment.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Pérez, 29, made his Red Sox debut in 2020 and led the club in starts (12) and innings pitched (62.0), going 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA (31 ER/62.0 IP). The left-hander allowed 10 earned runs in his first and last starts combined, but in his other 10 outings he posted a 3.57 ERA (21 ER/53.0 IP) and a .211 opponent batting average. He made three starts in which he threw at least 6.0 innings, allowed one or zero runs, and did not earn a win. In six starts away from Fenway Park, Pérez was 3-1 with a 3.52 ERA (12 ER/30.2 IP).

Originally signed by Texas in July 2007, Pérez is 56-61 with a 4.71 ERA (517 ER/988.2 IP) in 185 career appearances (169 starts) with the Rangers (2012-18), Twins (2019), and Red Sox (2020). He made more than 30 starts in 2016 (33) and 2017 (32) and has won at least 10 games in a season four times. Since the start of 2016, his 696.1 innings pitched are the eighth most in the majors among left-handed pitchers. Pérez’s lone Postseason appearance came in 2015 when he started Game 3 of the ALDS against Toronto.

Mazza, 31, made nine appearances (six starts) over three major league stints with the Red Sox in 2020, his first season in the organization. The right-hander went 1-2 with a 4.80 ERA (16 ER/30.0 IP), 29 strikeouts, and a .288 opponent batting average.
