Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber and first baseman/outfielder Sam Travis were recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.
  • Right-handed pitcher Hector Velázquez was optioned to Pawtucket following last night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Infielder Eduardo Núñez was designated for assignment.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Weber, 28, has appeared in six games (three starts) with the big league club this season, going 1-1 with a 5.12 ERA (11 ER/19.1 IP). The right-hander has also made 11 starts with Pawtucket, and in his last four he has posted a 2.35 ERA (6 ER/23.0 IP). He most recently pitched Thursday against Buffalo and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Acquired by Boston as a minor league free agent in December 2018, Weber has made 30 major league appearances (11 starts) with the Braves (2015-16), Mariners (2017), Rays (2018), and Red Sox (2019), going 2-6 with a 5.03 ERA (52 ER/93.0 IP) and an average of only 1.55 walks per 9.0 innings.

Travis, 25, has hit .194 (6-for-31) with two RBI in 10 games for Boston this year over three stints with the club. He last appeared for Boston on June 30 against the Yankees in London and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI as the starting left fielder. Travis, who made his first-ever Opening Day roster with the Red Sox in 2019, has appeared in 68 games for the PawSox and hit .275 (65-for-236) with seven home runs and a .362 on-base percentage. He has hit safely in each of his last seven minor league games, going 10-for-27 (.370) with two home runs in that time. In his major league career, Travis has made 21 starts at first base, six in left field, and five at designated hitter.

Velázquez, 30, allowed three runs (one earned) in the 12th inning last night against the Dodgers. The right-hander has made 24 appearances (eight starts) for Boston this season, posting a 5.67 ERA (29 ER/46.0 IP). Velázquez made his major league debut with Boston in 2017 after having his contract purchased from Campeche of the Mexican League and has since gone 11-7 with a 3.87 ERA (67 ER/155.2 IP) in 79 major league appearances (19 starts). He made his organizational debut with the PawSox in 2017 and most recently pitched for the club in 2018.

Núñez, 32, has appeared in 60 games for Boston this season, batting .228 (38-for-167) with two home runs and a .548 OPS. He made 21 starts at second base, six at third base, one at shortstop, and 10 as a designated hitter. Núñez has appeared in 856 major league games with the Yankees (2010-13), Twins (2014-16), Giants (2016-17), and Red Sox (2017-19). He was acquired by Boston from San Francisco on July 25, 2017 and re-signed as a free agent in February 2018. In 225 games with the Red Sox, he has batted .268 (218-for-812) with 20 home runs.
