Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today made the following roster moves:

  • Infielder/outfielder Yairo Muñoz was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 18) with a low back strain.
  • To fill Muñoz’s spot, outfielder César Puello was selected to the active major league roster from the Alternate Training Site.
  • To make room for Puello on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Zack Godley was transferred to the 45-day injured list.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Muñoz, 25, has hit .333 (15-for-45) with five doubles, one home run, and four RBI in 12 games since being recalled on August 31, hitting safely in nine of them. He has made seven starts in left field, four in right field, and one at designated hitter, recording two outfield assists. Muñoz has hit .278 (142-for-510) with 28 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs, and 59 RBI in 208 major league games, making starts at shortstop (40), second base (26), third base (17), left field (11), right field (11), and center field (seven). The right-handed hitter spent time in the Oakland Athletics (2012-17) and St. Louis Cardinals (2018-19) organizations prior to this season.

Puello, 29, is in his first season in the Red Sox organization after being signed as a minor league free agent in February. The right-handed hitter split the 2019 season between the Angels and Marlins organizations, batting .248 (31-for-125) with a .356 on-base percentage and four home runs in 44 major league games. Puello has appeared in 61 major league games with the Angels (2017, ’19), Rays (2017), and Marlins (2019), making 20 starts in left field, 19 in center field, and seven in right field. Signed by the Mets as an international free agent in 2007 at 16 years old, Puello has also spent time in the Yankees, Rangers, Diamondbacks, and Giants organizations.

Godley, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on September 10 (retroactive to September 7) with a right elbow flexor strain. He was selected to the Red Sox’ major league roster on July 26 and pitched in eight games with the club, including seven starts. The right-hander is 0-4 with an 8.16 ERA (26 ER/28.2 IP), having most recently pitched on September 4 against the Blue Jays. He made three appearances in which he threw 4.0 innings and allowed one or zero runs.
