September 19th, 2021

BOSTON, MA – The Red Sox will mark the start of Hispanic Heritage month today, Sunday, September 19, in pregame ceremonies and with tributes throughout the game recognizing the achievements and contributions of various members of Boston’s Hispanic/LatinX community. Hispanic Heritage Month at Fenway Park is presented by Goya Foods.

Sunday’s ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Marisol Amaya-Aluigi recognizing her 50 years of service as Executive Director of La Alianza Hispana, a nonprofit organization serving the Boston Latino community and its surrounding neighborhood. Pregame ceremonies will honor the public health achievements of Dr. Jose Abrego, a native of El Salvador who came to Boston for medical school and is currently the Medical Director at BIDMC-Chelsea. The club’s 4th inning “Hats off to Heroes” tribute will remember Sergeant Rosario Prichardo, a Lawrence native and one of 13 U.S. troops killed on August 26 in Afghanistan in a suicide bomber attack at Kabul Airport.

Former Red Sox pitcher and member of the 1967 Impossible Dream team Jose Santiago will be inducted into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame prior to the game. Founded in San Francisco in 1998 by Gabriel “Tito” Avila, the HHBMHOF is an International Museum Hall of Fame dedicated to recognizing the contributions made to baseball by Hispanic players. Since its inception, the HHBMHOF has inducted (74) players, coaches, broadcasters, Negro Leagues Hispanic players, MLB Scorers, and Pioneer Executives.

Other elements of Hispanic Heritage Day at Fenway Park include performances by Boston’s first female Mariachi band on Jersey Street, led by Veronica Robles, and the reading of the lineup in Spanish by Red Sox Spanish-language broadcaster Junior Pepen.
