April 16th, 2023

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today claimed left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester. To make room for Bernardino on the 40-man roster, the club transferred right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly to the 60-Day Injured List.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Bernardino, 31, has made two relief appearances for Triple-A Tacoma this season, allowing eight runs in 6.0 innings pitched. The left-hander yielded three runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings pitched across two appearances with the Mariners in 2022, his only Major League outings. The Valencia, California native signed with Seattle as a minor league free agent on June 27, 2022, after pitching for Tijuana in the Mexican Baseball League from 2021-22. He was originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 26th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft and owns a 3.70 ERA (118 ER/287.0 IP) in 233 career minor league appearances (two starts).

Kelly, 28, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on Thursday due to right elbow inflammation. The right-hander has allowed three earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched over six relief outings this season. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on December 21, 2020, Kelly is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (9 ER/21.0 IP) over 19 career relief appearances with Boston (2022-23).
