Red Sox reinstate catcher Reese McGuire from 10-day injured list

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated catcher Reese McGuire from the 10-Day Injured List. To make room for McGuire, the club designated catcher Jorge Alfaro for assignment.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

McGuire, 28, was placed on the Injured List on June 22 with a right oblique strain. He played in 11 rehab games for Triple-A Worcester, making three starts at catcher and going 2-for-10 with a double, one RBI, and one walk. In 40 games this season, the left-handed hitter has batted .267 (28-for-105) with 11 runs scored and 11 RBI. Acquired by Boston from the Chicago White Sox in August 2022, McGuire has hit .258 (186-for-721) in 270 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), White Sox (2022), and Red Sox (2022-23).

Alfaro, 30, has played in eight games for Boston, including four starts as the catcher. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-17 with two walks and one hit-by-pitch. He also appeared in 10 games for the Colorado Rockies this season, going 5-for-31 with four doubles and one home run. The Colombia native has batted .253 (402-for-1590) with 71 doubles, four triples and 48 home runs in 496 career Major League games with the Philadelphia Phillies (2016-18), Miami Marlins (2019-21), San Diego Padres (2022), Colorado Rockies (2023) and Boston Red Sox (2023).
