BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated infielder Yu Chang from the Paternity List. To make room for Chang on the active roster, the club optioned infielder/outfielder Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Minnesota Twins.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Chang, 27, was placed on the Paternity List yesterday. The right-handed hitter has played in 12 games with the Red Sox this season, making six starts at shortstop and two at second base. In Saturday’s win against the Los Angeles Angels, he went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, turning a 7-6 deficit into an 8-7 lead with a two-run single in the eighth inning. On the season, Chang is 2-for-26 (.077). He has played in 208 Major League games, third most among players born in Taiwan behind Wei-Yin Chen (219) and Hung-Chih Kuo (218).
Valdez, 24, was recalled from Triple-A Worcester yesterday and made his Major League debut last night, starting at second base and hitting a pair of singles. In 11 games with Worcester this season, the left-handed hitter has gone 7-for-39 (.179) with three doubles, one home run, and six walks, while making 11 starts at second base. The Dominican Republic native is ranked as a top 20 Red Sox prospect by both MLB.com (No. 17) and Baseball America (No. 19).
