Red Sox announce roster moves

March 30th, 2021

BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Outfielder Franchy Cordero was reinstated from the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
  • To make room for Cordero on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher John Schreiber was designated for assignment.
  • Infielder Michael Chavis and right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer were optioned to the Alternate Training Site.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Cordero, 26, was placed on the injured list on February 22, after being acquired by the Red Sox from the Kansas City Royals as part of a three-team trade earlier in the month. He has appeared in 95 major league games with the San Diego Padres (2017-19) and Royals (2020), batting .236 (67-for-284) with 12 home runs and a .737 OPS. The left-handed hitter made Opening Day rosters with the Padres in 2019 and with the Royals in 2020, missing most of last season on the injured list with a sprained right wrist. In six Grapefruit League games this year, Cordero is 5-for-17 (.294) with one triple and one home run.

Schreiber, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on February 18. He has made 28 major league relief appearances, all for the Tigers from 2019-20, going 2-1 with a 6.28 ERA (20 ER/28.2 IP) and 33 strikeouts. Selected by Detroit in the 15th round of the 2016 June Draft out of the University of Northwestern Ohio, Schreiber is 16-15 with a 1.99 ERA (45 ER/204.0 IP) in 147 minor league relief appearances.

Chavis, 25, has hit .241 (119-for-493) with 23 home runs and 77 RBI in 137 major league games. Selected by Boston in the first round of the 2014 June Draft, he has made 64 starts at first base, 47 at second base, 11 in left field, two at third base, and one at designated hitter for the Red Sox. In 25 Grapefruit League games this year, Chavis has hit .250 (15-for-60) with six home runs, 11 RBI, a .292 on-base percentage, and a .600 slugging percentage.

Brewer, 28, has made 80 major league appearances (four starts) with the San Diego Padres (2018) and Red Sox (2019-20), going 2-5 with a 4.70 ERA (47 ER/90.0 IP). He made four starts and seven relief appearances for Boston in 2020 but missed all of September on the injured list with a right middle finger strain. In five Grapefruit League outings (all in relief) this year, Brewer has allowed seven runs in 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk.
