BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Cleveland Indians, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

  • Infielder Michael Chavis was placed on the 10-day injured list with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder.
  • Right-handed pitcher Ryan Weber was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following yesterday’s game against the Angels.
  • Right-handed pitcher Travis Lakins and infielder Marco Hernández were recalled from Pawtucket.

President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

Chavis, 24, leads American League rookies with 58 RBI and 29 multi-hit games, trailing only Pete Alonso (85) for the most RBI among major league rookies. His 18 home runs and 58 RBI are both the most by a Red Sox in a debut season since Ellis Burks had 20 home runs and 59 RBI in 1987. Selected by the club in the first round of the 2014 June Draft, Chavis has hit .254 (88-for-347) while appearing defensively first base (49 games), second base (45), and third base (five).

Weber, 29, has made 11 appearances (three starts) over three stints with Boston this season, going 1-2 with a 4.35 ERA (15 ER/31.0 IP). He is 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA (30 ER/62.1 IP) in 13 starts for Pawtucket in 2019, posting a 1.64 ERA (6 ER/33.0 IP) in his last six beginning June 23. Acquired by Boston as a minor league free agent in December 2018, Weber has made 35 appearances (11 starts) with the Braves (2015-16), Mariners (2017), Rays (2018), and Red Sox (2019), going 2-7 with a 4.82 ERA (56 ER/104.2 IP).

Lakins, 25, made his major league debut this season and has appeared in seven games over three stints with Boston, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 9.1 innings (5.79 ERA). The right-hander has made 36 appearances for Pawtucket in 2019, posting a 4.95 ERA (22 ER/40.0 IP). He most recently tossed 2.0 scoreless innings on August 9 at Toledo, allowing three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Originally selected by Boston in the sixth round of the 2015 June Draft, Lakins has not allowed a run in 22 of his outings with Pawtucket this season, including 17 of his last 24.

Hernández, 26, has hit .333 (22-for-66) with two home runs in 29 major league games over two stints with Boston this season, with all 13 of his starts coming at second base. He has also hit .285 (39-for-137) in 35 games for Pawtucket this season, adding 12 doubles and two home runs. Acquired from the Cubs in 2014, Hernández has played in 90 career games for Boston, batting .303 (53-for-175) while making 20 starts at second base, 15 at third base, and six at shortstop. He missed the majority of the 2017 season and all of 2018 recovering from left shoulder surgery.
