ROOT SPORTS is highlighting the 20th Anniversary of the Seattle Mariners record setting 2001 season with a series of programs and features that will carry through the 2021 season.

Starting Thursday, January 7, select games from the 2001 season will debut each Thursday evening with a new game airing each week right up to Opening Day.

“In honor of the 20th Anniversary of the 2001 Mariners season, we wanted to bring back some of the games and let the fans relive the historic season,” said Jon Bradford, ROOT SPORTS Executive Producer. “In addition to airing these classic games, during Thursday game broadcasts this season we will have player interviews, trivia and other segments dedicated to the 2001 season.”

Thursday’s game, which starts at 8:00pm, is from April 2, 2001, which was Opening Night against the Oakland Athletics. The game featured Ichiro Suzuki’s Major League debut and his first Major League hit, as well as Freddy Garcia’s first Opening Day start, in a 5-4 win over the A’s.

Other January games include:

  • January 14, 7:00pm – April 6 @ Texas Rangers: Ichiro had 4 hits, including his first career home run, and Mark McLemore homered in his first at-bat as a starter for Mariners in the 9-7 win.
  • January 21, 7:00pm – April 28 vs. Chicago White Sox: This 8-5 Mariners win featured two Major League records as closer Kazuhiro Sasaki notched his 13th save, breaking the Major League record for most saves in April, and it was the Mariners 20th win of the month, surpassing the record for most wins in April.
  • January 28, 8:00pm – May 9 @ Boston Red Sox: The Mariners broke a 5-5 tie in the 8th inning with three doubles to score five runs, all with two outs, for the 10-5 win.
