November 12th, 2021

KANSAS CITY, MO. (November 12, 2021) – The Kansas City Royals today announced their Major League coaching staff for the 2022 campaign. Changes to third-year manager Mike Matheny’s staff include the additions of Keoni DeRenne as assistant hitting coach and Damon Hollins as the club’s first base coach. Terry Bradshaw (hitting), Larry Carter (bullpen), Cal Eldred (pitching), Pedro Grifol (bench), John Mabry (Major League coach) and Vance Wilson (third base), will all remain in their roles from last season. Tony Peña Jr. will return to a minor league coaching role in 2022.

Additionally, Allan de San Miguel has been named to the staff as a strategist/bullpen catcher, while Parker Morin will return as the lead strategist/bullpen catcher, Andy Ferguson will return as an advanced scouting analyst/strategist and Bill Duplissea will remain as the replay coordinator.

DeRenne will begin his third season in the Royals’ organization in 2022, after serving as the minor league assistant hitting coordinator the previous two years. This will be his first season on a Major League staff, as he served as minor league coach/coordinator in the Chicago Cubs’ (2019) and Pittsburgh Pirates’ (2012-18) organizations previously. That included managing the Pirates’ Dominican Summer League club in 2013. He played eight seasons in the minors with the Braves, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Red Sox and Phillies, after being selected in the 12th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arizona.

Hollins will be the club’s first base coach and coordinate base running, bunting and the outfield, after filling in for Rusty Kuntz in that role in parts of the last two seasons. Next season will mark his 13th in the Royals’ organization, serving as the minor league outfield, base running, and bunting coordinator last year. He’s also held coaching positions with Idaho Falls (2017-19 & 2013-14), Lexington (2015-16), Wilmington (2012), Kane County (2011) and Burlington (2010). He was a fourth-round selection by the Atlanta Braves in the 1992 First-Year Player Draft and played in parts of four seasons in the Majors with Atlanta (1998, 2004), the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998) and Tampa Bay (2005-06).

De San Miguel has spent the last five years in the Royals’ minor league system, including with Northwest Arkansas (AA) this past season. He is previously managed the Melbourne Aces (2020-21) of the Australian Baseball League, after four seasons as a player with the club. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Minnesota Twins in 2004 and played 13 seasons in the minors.
