July 2nd, 2022

All-Star starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins has been voted the National League Pitcher of the Month for June, and starter Dylan Cease of the Chicago White Sox has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for June.

Alcantara earned his first career NL Pitcher of the Month Award and is Miami’s second winner of the 2022 season, following his rotation-mate Pablo López in April. The Marlins are the first Club this season with a pair of Pitcher of the Month winners. Cease similarly claimed his first AL Pitcher of the Month Award and is the White Sox’s first recipient since his All-Star rotation-mate Lucas Giolito in May 2019.

Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins (@sandyalcantaramph)
• Across six starts, compiled a 3-1 record with 34 strikeouts, eight walks and a 1.89 ERA over 47.2 innings pitched, while permitting 34 hits and two home runs.

• Recorded his fifth career complete game (second of the season) on Wednesday against the Cardinals. Is the only pitcher in the Majors this year with multiple complete games.

• Has pitched at least 7.0 innings in 10 consecutive starts dating back to May 11th, the longest stretch by a Major League pitcher since Rick Porcello and Clayton Kershaw in 2016, and the longest by a Marlins hurler since Carl Pavano in 2004.

• Has logged eight victories on the season, which match Mark Buehrle (2012) and Ricky Nolasco (2012) for the second-most by a Marlins pitcher since 2012, trailing only José Fernández (11 in 2016).

Dylan Cease, Chicago White Sox (@dylancease7)
• Registered a 2-1 record with 45 strikeouts and a 0.33 ERA across five starts, while limiting the opposition to 19 hits, 14 walks and one home run over 27.1 innings.

• Did not permit an earned run in five consecutive starts from May 29th – June 21st, joining Doc White as the only starters in Club history to post such a streak.

• Finished his impressive month in dominant fashion, tallying 11-or-more strikeouts in consecutive starts on June 21st and June 26th. Became the first Sox pitcher to fan at least 11 batters in consecutive outings since Lucas Giolito in August 2020.

• Enters play today averaging 13.44 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched, which is on pace to be the third highest such mark in MLB history by a starting pitcher (excluding 2020) behind only Gerrit Cole (13.82) in 2019 and Chris Sale (13.50) in 2018.
