SHOHEI OHTANI SELECTED TO START 2023 ALL-STAR GAME

Earns automatic starting assignment at DH as A.L. leading vote-getter in Phase 1 of fan voting

June 22nd, 2023

ANAHEIM Major League Baseball announced today that Shohei Ohtani has been selected to the 2023 American League All-Star team as the starting designated hitter. Additionally, Mike Trout was named a finalist for a starting spot in the outfield.

Ohtani led the A.L. with 2,646,307 votes during Phase 1 of fan voting, to automatically receive the starting spot at DH and bypass the second phase of voting.  This marks Ohtani’s third consecutive All-Star start at DH and he joins Hall of Famer David Ortiz (2011-13) as the only players to receive three straight fan elections at the position. He also joins Rod Carew (1979) and Trout (2019) as Angels players to lead the A.L. in fan voting.

Ohtani becomes the 10th player in Angels history to be selected to at least three All-Star Games as a position player, joining: Mike Trout (10), Rod Carew (6), Jim Fregosi (6), Vladimir Guerrero (4), Garret Anderson (3), Troy Glaus (3), Reggie Jackson (3), Fred Lynn (3) and Bobby Grich (3).

Entering play today, Ohtani leads the Majors in home runs (24), total bases (175), extra-base hits (41), slugging percentage (.616) and OPS (.993) and is tied for first in RBI (58). He was the A.L. Player of the Week for June 12-18 and his 24 homers through 76 team games have tied his own franchise record from 2021.

Trout advances to Phase 2 of All-Star voting after finishing second among A.L. outfielders with 1,604,762 votes in Phase 1.  Fan voting for the finalists will begin at 9:00 a.m. (PT) on Monday, June 26 and concludes at 9:00 a.m. (PT) on Thursday, June 29. During Phase 2, vote totals will reset and do not carry over from Phase 1.

Trout is seeking his 11th career All-Star selection and 10th consecutive selection as a starter via fan voting. If he earns a starting spot, he would become the fourth player in A.L. history with 10 fan elections with one Club, joining Hall of Famers Cal Ripken Jr. (BAL, 17), George Brett (KC, 11) and Ken Griffey Jr. (SEA, 10).

Winners of the Phase 2 vote will be announced on June 29 on ESPN at 4:00 p.m. (PT).  The remainder of the All-Star rosters will be announced on Sunday, July 2, at 2:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPN, with Ohtani looking to earn selections as both a hitter and pitcher for a third straight season. The 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is scheduled to be played Tuesday, July 11 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
