Arlington, Texas— Major League Baseball today announced the 12 winners for its “RBI for RBI” Scholarship program that rewards Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) alumni who have demonstrated both academic success and positive community involvement.

Charity Vernon, a 2021 Rangers RBI Softball All-Star, was among those selected to receive a $5,000 college scholarship renewable for three years, totaling $20,000.

“I am shocked, humbled, and thrilled to be the recipient of the RBI for RBI scholarship,” said Vernon. “I am certain that there were numerous qualified applicants, but I am hoping my dedication and commitment to the league helped me secure the honor. This past season has been my best RBI experience and to win the coveted award is icing on the cake.”

The Cedar Hill High School graduate started her freshman year at Navarro College on Aug. 24. Vernon will play on the softball team and plans to become a pediatric nurse practitioner upon completion of her degree

“Charity is an incredible teammate who elevates the play and spirit of her team,” said Juan Leonel Gárciga, Director of Youth Baseball & Academy Programs. “She was an impact player on our RBI Softball All-Star team and is a young lady who ended her RBI career on a high note with us. I hope that once she is done playing, she considers coaching because she has an enthusiasm for the game that is unmatched.”

Vernon is the second Texas Rangers Youth Academy softball player to win Major League Baseball’s “RBI for RBI” Scholarship, Erin Ledesma was awarded the scholarship in 2020.

The recipients are receiving the grants through the “RBI for RBI” Scholarship Fund, created in 2008 to provide financial support for college-bound student-athletes based on academic record, leadership qualities, participation in school and community activities, and financial need. Since its inception, the “RBI for RBI” Scholarship Fund has awarded more than 140 college scholarships to RBI participants from 37 programs.

The “RBI for RBI” scholarships provide each recipient the opportunity to pursue any field of study at a two-year college, four-year college, university or vocational school in the United States or Puerto Rico. The scholarships may be renewed for up to three years or until the award recipient has earned his or her training certificate, associate degree or bachelor’s degree.
