White Sox acquire outfielder Dominic Fletcher from Arizona in exchange for pitcher Cristian Mena

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Dominic Fletcher from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cristian Mena.

Fletcher, 26, appeared in 28 games over two stints with Arizona in 2023, batting .301/.350/.441 (28-93) with five doubles, one triple, two home runs, 14 RBI and 10 runs scored. He made his major-league debut on April 30 at Colorado and went 8-12 with a double, triple, two home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored over a three-game stretch vs. San Francisco from May 11-13.

Fletcher, 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, also played in 66 games with Class AAA Reno in 2023, hitting .291/.399/.500 (81-278) with 18 doubles, five triples, 10 homers, 45 RBI and 71 runs scored before being placed on the injured list on September 4 with a fractured left index finger.

Fletcher, who bats and throws left-handed, was named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for August 7-13 after going 12-23 (.522) with seven doubles, two homers, nine RBI and 13 runs scored in six games. He recorded five RBI on August 8 vs. Salt Lake and scored five runs on August 11 vs. the Bees.

Fletcher also played for Team Italy in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he was teammates with recently acquired White Sox infielder Nicky Lopez.

Fletcher is a career .295/.366/.474 (418-1,417) hitter with 85 doubles, 21 triples, 42 home runs, 201 RBI and 262 runs scored in 356 games over four minor-league seasons. He was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in both 2019 and 2022 and recorded a 30-game hitting streak from April 19-May 27, 2022 between Class AA Amarillo and Reno.

Fletcher originally was selected by the Diamondbacks as a Competitive Balance B pick (75th overall) in the 2019 First-Year Player draft out of the University of Arkansas. His older brother, David, plays for the Atlanta Braves after spending six seasons (2018-23) with the Los Angeles Angels.

Mena, 21, went 8-7 with a 4.85 ERA (72 ER/133.2 IP) and 156 strikeouts in 27 starts last season between Class AA Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte. Mena originally was signed by the White Sox as an international free agent on July 2, 2019 out of San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic.
