White Sox Agree to terms with Mike Clevinger; designate José Rodríguez for assignment

April 4th, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Prior to tonight’s series opener at Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox agreed to terms on a one-year, $3-million contract with right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger and optioned him to the Arizona Complex League White Sox. To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder José Rodríguez for assignment.

Clevinger, 33, went 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA (55 ER/131.1 IP), 110 strikeouts and two complete games over 24 starts with Chicago last season after agreeing to terms on a one-year deal on December 4, 2022. He led White Sox starters in wins and ERA, and the 24 starts marked his most since 2018 with Cleveland (32).

Clevinger’s 3.27 road ERA (26 ER/71.2 IP) in 2023 would have tied for the fifth-lowest in the American League with the required IP. His 3.32 ERA (31 ER/84.0 IP) from June 1 through the end of the season was the ninth-lowest mark in the AL (minimum 80.0 IP).

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Clevinger has gone 60-39 with a 3.45 ERA (302 ER/788.2 IP), .226 opponents average and 804 strikeouts (9.18 per 9.0 IP) in 152 games (128 starts) over eight seasons in the major leagues with Cleveland (2016-20), San Diego (2020-22) and Chicago (2023). Among major-league pitchers with at least 750.0 IP since 2016, he ranks 10th in opponents average and 11th in ERA.

Clevinger has appeared in the postseason five times (2016-18, ’20, ’22), and was a member of Cleveland’s American League pennant-winning club in 2016.

Rodríguez, 22, combined to hit .262/.292/.437 (123-469) with 21 home runs and 62 RBI in 106 games last season with Class AA Birmingham and Class AAA Charlotte.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
