White Sox announce five roster moves
CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. Tampa Bay, the Chicago White Sox made the following five roster moves:
- Selected contract from Class AAA Charlotte (2): OFs Rafael Ortega and Tommy Pham;
- Optioned to Charlotte (1): OF Dominic Fletcher;
- Designated for assignment (2): LHP Bailey Horn and OF Kevin Pillar;
Pham, 36, has gone 5-17 (.294) with one RBI and three runs scored in four games with Charlotte after signing with the White Sox as a free agent on April 16.
Pham batted .256/.328/.446 (109-426) with 27 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 68 RBI, 55 runs scored and 22 stolen bases over 129 games between New York-NL and Arizona in 2023. He was traded by the Mets to the Diamondbacks on August 1, where he hit .279 (17-61) with three doubles, three homers, four RBI and 10 runs scored in 16 postseason games as the D’Backs reached the World Series.
Pham is a career .259/.351/.435 (876-3,383) hitter with 163 doubles, 130 home runs, 431 RBI, 559 runs scored and 119 stolen bases in 1,005 games over 10 MLB seasons with St. Louis (2014-18), Tampa Bay (2018-19), San Diego (2020-21), Cincinnati (2022), Boston (2022), the Mets (2023) and Arizona (2023). He owns a .453 slugging percentage and .833 OPS vs. left-handed pitchers.
Pham has reached the postseason four times, hitting .313/.333/.513 (36-115) in 31 career games.
Ortega, 32, is hitting .241/.378/.431 (14-58) with three home runs, 14 RBI, 11 runs scored and 14 walks over 18 games with Charlotte this season after signing with the White Sox as a free agent on January 5.
Ortega, a native of El Tigre, Venezuela, is a career .247/.324/.352 (281-1,136) hitter with 22 homers, 109 RBI, 136 runs scored and 47 stolen bases in 411 games over seven MLB seasons with Colorado (2012), Los Angeles-AL (2016), Miami (2018), Atlanta (2019), Chicago-NL (2021-22) and the Mets (2023).
Fletcher, 26, is hitting .203/.277/.271 (12-59) with six RBI in 20 games this season, his first with the Sox. He was acquired from Arizona on February 3 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Cristian Mena.
Pillar, 35, batted .160/.290/.360 (4-25) with one home run and four RBI in 17 games this season, his first with the White Sox after signing as a free agent on February 5.
Horn, 26, has gone 1-1 with a 11.32 ERA (13 ER/10.1 IP) and 15 strikeouts over nine relief appearances with Class AAA Charlotte in 2024. He was reacquired by the Sox from the Cubs on February 27 in exchange for right-hander Matthew Thompson.
Following the moves, Chicago’s 40-man roster remains at 40.
