April 10th, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS – Prior to today’s series opener at Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Joe Kelly on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 9) with a right groin strain, selected the contract of right-hander Keynan Middleton from Class AAA Charlotte and outrighted right-hander Jonathan Stiever to Charlotte.

Middleton, 29, is 0-0 with a save, three strikeouts and .111 (1-9) opponents average in 3.0 scoreless IP over three relief appearances with Charlotte this season. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Middleton, a native of Portland, Ore., signed with the White Sox as a minor-league free agent on January 15, 2023.

Middleton, who will wear uniform No. 99, is 8-6 with a 4.01 ERA (64 ER/143.2 IP), 13 saves, 18 holds and 135 strikeouts in 154 career games (one start) with Los Angeles-AL (2017-20), Seattle (2021) and Arizona (2022). He originally was selected by the Angels in the third round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.

Kelly, 34, is 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA (3 ER/2.2 IP), one hold and three strikeouts over three relief appearances this season.

Stiever, 25, allowed one hit over 2.0 scoreless IP in his only start with the Knights this season on April 4 at Columbus.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
