White Sox claim pitcher Emilio Vargas off waivers from Arizona

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have claimed right-handed pitcher Emilio Vargas off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Vargas, 24, went 5-5 with a 3.84 ERA (41 ER/96.0 IP), 82 strikeouts and a .232 (83-358) opponents average over 20 starts between Class AA Jackson and the Arizona Rookie League Diamondbacks in 2019. Following the season, he made three appearances (one start) with the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League, going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (2 ER/6.0 IP) and nine strikeouts. 

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Vargas has gone 35-33 with a 3.48 ERA (220 ER/569.2 IP), 554 strikeouts and a .236 (508-2,148) opponents average over seven minor-league seasons. He was named to the 2018 California midseason and 2014 Dominican Summer League All-Star Teams.

Vargas, a native of Moca, Dominican Republic, originally was signed by Arizona on January 23, 2013.
