Yankees acquire C Jose Trevino from Texas

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired C Jose Trevino from the Texas Rangers in exchange for RHP Albert Abreu and LHP Robert Ahlstrom.

Trevino, 29, batted .239 (68-for-285) with 23R, 14 doubles, 5HR, 30RBI and 12BB in 89 games for the Texas Rangers in 2021. Additionally, he started exactly half of the Rangers’ games at catcher (81), totaling more starts than his previous three seasons combined (44 starts from 2018-20). Trevino was the recipient of the 2021 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award, as presented by the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the BBWAA. He was also selected as the Rangers nominee for the 2021 Roberto Clemente Award.

Over parts of four Major League season, the right-handed batter has hit .245 (120-for-489) with 51R, 31 doubles, 9HR, 55RBI and 18BB in 156 career games. The Corpus Christi, Tex., native was selected in the sixth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Oral Roberts (Okla.) University.

Abreu, 26, went 2-0 with one save and a 5.15 ERA (36.2IP, 27H, 21ER, 19BB, 35K, 8HR) in 28 relief appearances with the Yankees in 2021. Additionally, he went 1-0 with two saves and a 3.78 ERA (16.2IP, 10H, 7ER, 11BB, 31K, 0HR) in 10 relief appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The right-handed pitcher saw his first Major League action in 2020 with the Yankees and has gone 2-1 with one save and a 5.68 ERA (38.0IP, 31H, 25R/24ER, 21BB, 37K, 9HR) over his first two Major League seasons. The Guayubín, D.R., native was acquired by the Yankees from the Houston Astros along with RHP Jorge Guzman in exchange for C Brian McCann and cash considerations on November 17, 2016. He was originally signed by Houston as a non-drafted free agent on August 5, 2013.

Ahlstrom, 22, did not pitch during the 2021 season. The left-handed pitcher was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon. In three seasons with the Ducks (2019-21), the Placerville, Calif., native was 16-11 with a 3.51 ERA (187.0IP, 176H, 81R/73ER, 43BB, 171K, 13HR) in 34 appearances (28 starts). As a junior in 2021, went 9-3 with a 2.50 ERA (90.0IP, 77H, 28R/25ER, 16BB, 92K, 4HR) in 14 starts, while also earning First Team All-Pac 12 honors and being named to the Pac 12 All-Defensive Team.
